GPU issue

After nearly a month trouble free, my thinkpad T41 decided to have the GPU problem. I'm not going to get an intel motherboard, the reflow seems too risky, are there any way just to open up the system and do something to fix it, say without using a 1500w Heat gun?

Try press on the GPU and power on the system. If it will be OK, stack few pieces of tough paper on the GPU. The pressure created by paper and mounted keyboard will be enough to keep the GPU down on the board. But usually this is the temporary solution only It's way better to let someone to reflow or better reball the GPU. Unfortunately I tried to contact jamiphar (USA) via his e-mail and got no response at all (written 6 days back).

Which bit do I need to add pressure to? can anyone give me a simple illustration on the pic:

... the big, black IC labeled "ATI" it the GPU (more or less in the centre of the image, between the blue IC and the miniPCI WLAN card where the two small cables come out).

Do I need to take the chip out (can I?) then reinstall it there or just push it hard in?

No, it's soldered in (not very well, apparently!) so you can't really do much other than cram in some cardboard to put downward pressure on the chip/socket interface. May or may not work and if it does, probably not for long.
