Remove Ultrabay DVD Drive to make laptop lighter?

#1 Post by erik-the-red » Mon Jan 26, 2009 12:55 pm

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61 from July 2007.

Is it OK to remove the optical drive to make it lighter?

You may want to replace it with a travel bezel as otherwise dirt/dust could get into the computer.

And remember that the travel bezel is not available in a model that has the flat bezel on the front. It has a slight angle at the bottom to fit flush with a T4X series. They didn't make them to flush fit T6X or Z6X.

Fits fine. Part number is posted around here somewhere. Its not as nice when it doesnt fit completely flush though, so it is a bummer for me :D

The travel bezel for the T4x/T6x (whether flat or not) is suboptimal for the R5x/R6x as its height is 3mm too short and would leave an opening.

I use one in my R61 from July '08. It works great. The Thinkpad is lighter, and it doesn't make the noises attributable to the optical drive each time the com comes out of standby. There were two part numbers for the bezel. One was for the Ultrabay Slim, and the other was for the Ultrabay I have. Initially Lenovo sent me the wrong one. I tried it, and there was a gap at the top of the slot. I had it swapped out for the right one. The part number for the one which fits my Ultrabay (forget what it's called -- it's the non-slim one) is 13N5354.

The R5x/R6x uses an Ultrabay Enhanced.

Does ultrabay enhanced offer a flat bezel version of the travel bezel, or angled like R4X
