gripe T42/T40 keyboard

#1 Post by efan » Thu Jan 20, 2005 1:56 pm

Just got my brand new T42.

Chose T42 over other cheaper alternatives because I really like the keyboard on my R40 which is firm and crisp. I expected the same from the high-end T42's keyboard...

But T42 is dissappointing. I'd say typing on R40 keyboard is like cornering on a BMW and typing on T42 is like cornering on a Honda...yes it's that bad.

Which Honda are you talking about? The S2000 can out turn pretty much any BMW.. :). I understand your comparison I own a BMW and a Honda.. LOL.

Anyways. I have not used R40 but I am sure people have their own preference when it comes to keyboard feel.

BTW si your keyboard Thai or China made? Thai keyboard is supposed to feel a lot better than China made keyboard.

have you looked up to see which keyboard you have on your T42..?
do it here:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... sLookup.vm

if you have the thai made keyboard, then you have a better keyboard than was on your R40..

all that said, exactly what is it you don't like about the keyboard..? :)

my keyboard info is 93P4750 93P4780 KEYBOARDS US ENGLISH NMB....dont know if that's thai or china.

I have also tried T40 and the keyboard is slightly more responsive than the T42 but still not as good as R40.

Also, I want to mention the lid in R40 when closed is tight, but the magnisium lid of T42 has a gap of about 1 or 2mm when closed. and the flexview on the T42 is bright and nice but seems to me the T40/T42's TFT display are slightly more yellowish than the R40....that said, I still prefer the flexview on the T42 than the plain vanilla XGA on the R40.

and it's honda accord I was talking about. if it was like s2000, I sure wont complain.

the 93P4780 is the thai keyboard made by NMB and is generally considered to be the best..

aside from the cornering abilities of your keyboard, what else is it doing or not doing that is so bad..? :)

I beg to differ. The E-46 M3 with out turn the S2000 anyday, hell even the E-36 would smoke it. :D

i'm sure that an acura (honda) NSX can outcorner even my SL600..
not to mention most all BMW's..
though i must admit, the SL600 corners like its on rails..
my aston martin lagonda however is a bit mushy until one gets accustomed to that 1980's type of sports car suspension..
when i add the T42p to the passenger seat i notice i can accomplish almost .9g on the local "skid pad" corner i use..
too bad florida does not have real sporty roads..
like devils slide in pacifica, calif...
everything here is flat and straight..

now this is whats called thread drift.. :)
so perhaps we go back to [censored] about what i find to be an excellent keyboard..

Ive used a T-41 keyboard before, and I find my T30 has a much firmer feel when typing , the T-41 seems little flimsy

I'd like to post an addendum to this thread and note that part number 08K5015 and 08K5044 is also the Thai keyboard as noted in this thread:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ht=08k5015

Therefore, both the FRU above and this part number 08K5015 08K5044 are similar in the quality of the keyboard.

having owned an r40, i can say its keyboard feel more closely resembles a kia. haven't owned one of them, thankfully, but it's easy to draw these conclusions.

Maybe the low end models, but my R40 is very nice. Granted the keyboard isn't anywhere near the 600 series, but it is close to my T2xs.

The iSeries, T2x and A2x have very similar keyboards. While there is slight difference between the manufacturers for the models and both are comfortable to type on, they both leave much to be desired when compared to a 600, 560 or 380.

I must be the enigma here...I like the T2x and R40 almost as much as the 600 series. Much better than the Toshiba Tecra 8100 that I had to use for 3 years, for work....not to mention various Dell, HP and Gateway models that I have played with.

We all have different tastes I guess. I like my T21's keyboard for short periods of time but I can't type on it for an extended time period without my hand getting sore and when you do as much typing as I do that can be an issue. Over time I've trained my hands to strike keys lighter and that's improved things a good bit but not entirely. As for the competition though, I will agree that the T2x is much better than a Dell or Toshiba of the same era.
