Poll: Who is using Songbird

#1 Post by Stargate199 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 8:41 pm

I'm just curious here. I have installed Songbird on my computers and I think I will use it as my default music player. It uses more memory that I like (which will probably be fixed in future updates), but it can play protected iTunes files, and just about any other music format known. It is based on the Mozilla code so there are add-ons for it. It even has ShoutCast which I like because the radios stations on there are much better than what is available on iTunes.

So who has/is using Songbird?

I have been using Winamp primarily in XP. However on Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 Beta I use Windows Media Center. I like that it works with my Cyberlink Remote Control (the remote is wireless but uses a usb receiver dongle).

I really like the scrolling wallpaper in W7b WMC. It has the album art of all my albums (MP3's) side by side, scrolling slowly down the screen. The album that is playing is displayed over the scrolling wall paper and moves location every so often. Actually it appears to be a screensaver for WMC.

Here is the best writeup I can find just now. The first image in the page below is what I am describing - minus the menu on the left.

with the intergration of "play it all" shortcut into the explorer of Vista and 7 there is no need for me to have a dedicated music player. i search through explorer like i would in iTunes or Songbird and I play with one click of a button. i make playlists using windows folders. really this is one of those inventions in Vista that made using iTues obsolete for me. oh and for ipod i still got my old T60 on which i might try songbird, but my next music player will be zune. iTunes+Quicktime+Safari+Windows = no good.

I use songbird mainly for aquiring music.

On my windows machines WMP is the player of choice and for my Macs I roll with iTunes or Quicktime.

On either platform I make sure to install any relevant 3rd party codecs / packages. In windows I can play any known format in WMP and in OS X I can do the same in Quicktime and since Quicktime can do it, so can iTunes.

Here one vote for winamp...I like its simplicity, and multiple "user functions" (like jump to file). I´m still using the classic skin... :jhem:

I have used Winamp for many years, and I may go back to it once everything in my iTunes collection goes DRM-free (just a few tracks that are not yet DRM-free). I do like some of the addons that are available. One of my favorite's the the lyrics addon that will show the lyrics to the song that is currently playing in a sidebar. I was kind of turned off to Winamp after version 5.50 because I think it started to get too chunky for a music player. I never used the new skin that came with that version (still used Winamp Modern). I may wait to see what happens for Songbird before going back to Winamp.

So do I, I don't like that bento skin (or whatever the name is), but installation procedure is really flexible and you can choose what (not) to install...

I used to be a big fan of Winamp, I moved away when it started giving me problems. I would spend alot of time playing with the Viualizer seeing what i could come up with

Exactly! And I always make a very lean install of winamp (get rid from library and visualizer etc... this procedure makes winamp a lot faster and more stable ;) ).

Cheers

Same here. I was introduced in 98' and never looked back... actually thats not true, I have tried other players many times but never found any as simple and nice as Winamp. I would like to have indexed searches built in since I drag and drop now from explorer. Maybe they already have a plugin.

Again, same here...

I don't use plugins but I'm sure you can find what you're looking for here (check The Ultimate Media Library Plugin 1.15; maybe that will do...); also you don't need to do drag and drop from explorer, just select your songs/folders in explorer and from context menu (right click) click Enqueue in Winamp... Or you can use built-in Media Library...

Hope it helps...

i could never get used to winamp, dunno why. i first tried it in 99 but never liked. now regarding songbird, i just uninstalled iTunes and downloaded songbird. both work pretty much the same except that sonbird has less bloat.

Used to use Winamp heaps, but nowadays I find I'm using Mediamonkey a lot...the capabilities to sync to my iPod Touch are excellent, and it does what I need it to do without a hint of fuss. Only times I'll use iTunes is for podcast downloads and the occasional purchasing of music, otherwise I don'tr really like it that much.

is there anyway to speed up songbird's start up? it takes forever for it to load, i think even longer than iTunes. is there any ad on to make it start with windows?

Although I mostly use winamp, considering the fact that we are on Bill Morrow´s forum I give a vote for Songbird :parrot: :)

Cheers
