So the verizon guys came on over today....

#1 Post by Temetka » Wed Jan 28, 2009 1:28 am

and they left me a shiny new FIOS setup. 8)

I got phone, tv and 20/20 internets. :bow:

According to DSL reports I am getting 19.8MB Down and 5.4 Up. I am going to call to ask about the up since it's roughly 25% of what they sold me, but I am very happy.

20MB down feels far, far faster than my old 1.5MB/s DSL line (also verizon).

I also got a pretty cool new wifi router with a USB port in it. I am going to plug in a DSL hub, my printer and a hard disk. Schweet.

So to all you guys on DSL and 5MB/s Cable: Sucka's. :banana: :banana:

I am getting at&t Uverse this week which is like Fios. They offer speeds up to 18 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up and plan on going even faster. TV and phone can also be delivered. They have a DVR that can record 4 shows at once (2 of which can be HD shows) and then play any of the recordings on any TV in the house. Install happens for me Friday. I am getting 3.0 mbps internet (same speed as I have now which is fast enough for what I need) and the U200 TV package (200 channels plus some music channels like you get on DirectTv).
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Unfortunately I don't have the option of fiber optics here. the best I can do is 12MB Down Up 1MB Up on a cable line through COX for 60$ a month.

but on the up side congrats on your upgrade.

i'm not sure that Verizon offers 20/20 anymore, at least not in the triple play package, i think they have standardized on 20/5 across the board. definitely double check in case i'm wrong and do make sure that you only get billed for 20/5. i switched from Comcast to FiOS two years ago and couldn't be happier with the service.

you might be interested in visiting the FiOS TV and Fiber Optics (internet) forums here:

and don't panic when you read some of the negative posts in there, they're all whiny butts.

@Temetka:

Glad you like it, Mike. Hopefully everyone else will as well. Tens of thousands of jobs depend on whether people end up choosing FiOS...

@Stargate199:

Hate to burst your bubble, but nothing offered in the U.S. is like FiOS...not even close.

I just upgraded from my 1MBPS today to 12MBPS and I love it, I am downloading at 2MBPS Vs my old 185KBPS, it's all because of this thread.
no more connection interupted when I play my BF2 and COD4 :banana:

That at&t unverse TV setup sounds great. I dont have those kinda options here.

I hit 6MB / Sec when I was downloading the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Beta to try at work.

To say I was smiling is an understatement.

I watch a lot of stuff from Hulu and the HD streams would make my DSL scream, but FIOS laughs at it.

Soon thought the speed increase will become blase and I will find my self itching for more bandwidth. Something about download speeds is that it's never fast enough until it is instant and even then people might just want everything pre-downloaded and ready to go.
