T40 Proc Upgrade

#1 Post by vanman8 » Fri Jan 30, 2009 3:56 pm

i have a 2373-75u that has been upgraded from a 1.5 banias to a 1.6 of the same with no issue and i have aquired a 1.5 (i believe dothan due to 2mb cache) from a dead hp after the switch the system BIOS is giving the correct speed and cache info however windows xp and cpu-z both are stating 600 mhz either from the system and also from mini-pe

any help would be appreciated

thanks in advance

Hardly worth the effort to switch either of them! Unless you go to a 2.0 or 2.1 GHz, you won't notice any difference in performance. As far as your 600MHz is concerned, that sounds like speedstep/power management issue with the new BIOS. Is your OS/system software up to date? Try selecting maximum performance and see if that changes anything. I had a 2.0GHz working just fine in a T40.

It is probably a 725a instead of a 725. Those are not supported by the bios and boot up at 600mhz. You can use the NHC software utility to set the speed.

Perhaps true, but there is a huge psychological boost between 1.5 and 1.6GHz. It's like adding a wing and loud muffler to your car.

(Actually, I've done several of these and for the $10 cost of a 1.6GHz cpu (only $5 if you sell your 1.5GHz cpu for $5), I'd swear I can tell the difference. Not dramatic, but a bit snappier.) 1.7GHz Dothan, and you can definitely tell the difference.

What about from 1.6 banias to a 2.0 Dothan? Is 2.0 Dothan produce noticably more heat?

I have a T40p and I'm thinking whether I should do the upgrade or just sell it.

Thanks

A Dothan is cooler than Banias at the same speed. Since most of the time it'll be at 600mhz with either of them the Dothan will be cooler most of the time, obviously under heavy load it will be hotter (but not much)

I would just make a 1.7Ghz Dothan upgrade. These are plentiful and cheap.

But is it worth it to go from 1.6 to 1.7? I know it's from Banias to Dothan, but I just wonder if I can tell the difference for the extra 100MHz.

upgrade CPU, then mod chipset to work with FSB 133 -> extra speed for free
T42 & R9600, PM M750 @ 1,86GHz ( i855 @ FSB 133 )

I did that upgrade from a 1.6 Banias to a 2.0 Dothan on my T41. Yes it runs notably faster and quite a bit hotter but I haven't had any heat-related problems. The 2.1GHz Dothan puts out even more heat, so I'd probably stay away from that one.
