PC2100 vs PC2700 memory on X32

#1 Post by T39andcounting » Fri Jan 30, 2009 4:45 pm

I've recently picked up an X32 on ebay. Great little machine, but it feels slow! It's got 1GB of original PC2100 IBM RAM (P/N 10K0035). I think 1GB is enough for what I'm using it for, but would there be a speed boost if I replace it with PC2700?

It's also got the original 40GB drive (p/n 13N69110). I was thinking of putting in a bigger hard drive, so would a newer drive make a bigger difference?

Thanks for any advice!

No. Maybe get 2gb, but you will not notice anything from just pc2100->pc2700.

A new HD will make a difference. Get a WD2500BEVE or an HM160HC, those are the best 5400rpm drives.

X32 should not be running PC2100, but PC2700...given its Dothan CPU and 400Mhz FSB...

Right now your machine is running at 266Mhz instead because of PC2100 RAM...so yes, 2GB of PC2700 will make it faster...

Agreed with recommendations for a bigger/faster drive, my suggestion, however would be any Seagate of the new generation, preferably 160GB.

Hope this helps.

So given that the RAM is causing a slow down, and I'm running at at least 50% free space on the original 40GB hard drive (although I could easily dumb another 50GB+ of songs, video, etc on there if I had the space!) what's going to give me the best speed increase? RAM or new Hard drive?

And any other hard drive recommendations other than the 3 below? I want at least 160Gb, as less than that doesn't seem much point!

If Windows was installed a long time ago, do a clean install. That often speeds up the system dramatically.

It's a recent install, (only got it about a month ago, and it had a fresh install then) I'm just keen to squeeze as much performance out of it as possible! ;-)
