Thinkpad T61p 6459CTO monitor wont stay in powered off state

#1 Post by Hakubi » Sun Feb 01, 2009 4:58 am

Hello,

Been having a problem with my thinkpad T61p (bios dated 6/6/2008)

I'm using windows XP pro 32bit, fully up to date and have killed all non essential programs from taskmanager that i can think of and my computer STILL wont turn off its LCD monitor (via energy star count down or FN-F3 shortcut)

it shuts off fine for a couple minuets but then randomly wakes up as if i have touched the mouse or a key...I'm thinking it has to be either a service or an application im overlooking but have no idea where to start...i will provide logs upon request.

Can anyone help?

First I'd try a Linux Live CD to see it it occurs there. Then I'd remove the keyboard and disconnect it and the touchpad. Then run the machine in a dock to see if the problem reoccurs.

Just tried Unbuntu 8.10 and it doesn't seem to resume from turning the monitor off unless i push a key or move the mouse ... any way to find out what is interuptting the monitor sleeping?

Well, it's definately a windows XP problem, so you are going to have to isolate it to a program, process, or setting in XP. I use msconfig and shut off start up items and processes. Check for Virus's and malware, either one can also cause this waking thing.

Have you checked if your wireless card was waking up your computer? There's a setting in XP that allows incoming packets to take your computer out of standby (that's what I'm thinking when you say powered down state). Turn that setting off and your computer shouldn't wake up on standby any more. Right click on the wireless network via network connections, click configure, and go to the power management tab.

Powered off meaning shut down, stand by, or hibernation?
