Looking for digital voice recorder for dictation

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Sun Feb 01, 2009 2:27 pm

I wonder if any of you can point me to a digital voice recorder that functions like a tape voice recorder - i.e., when dictating you can stop and back up a bit and record over the place where you misspoke and keep going, and at the end of the session end up with the recording in a single file. Price is a consideration.

Thanks.

Do these have the capability I asked about? I'm trying to save myself the time of reading through manual after manual to find out which of the many machines out there (if any) will do what I want.

I've used Olympus Digital Recorders from their expensive "x"300 models down to their cheapest WS-100 / $30 versions.
Regarding dictation, the higher end models have the backstepping feature you're describing but Olympus offers decent voice recognition / transcription software DSSPlayer and you can even buy an old fashioned foot pedal accessory for that DictaPhone style of transcription.

But the real beauty of it is the DSSPlayer interoperability with DragonNaturalSpeaking basic.

I bought a used version of Dragon 9 basic (they're currently on version 10) for $20 on Amazon and had to read a few sample chapters into the Dragon Software, then just clicked some menus to "connect" into DSSPlayer and now my notes transcribe faster and with surprising accuracy.

The tips to using Dragon and any other voice recognition (including IBM's ViaVoice) is a decent but not necessarily a super expensive microphone and with as little background noise as possible.

Another great reason to use the Olympus, the built in external mic's are superb and if you ever had to record a meeting to protect yourself, you can drop that DVR into the side pocket of your slacks or even into the inside pocket of heavy wool coat and it will still record the conversation, nuance and sounds with amazing clarity.

Every Olympus I've used runs at least nine hours on a traditional Duracell or Energizer Alkaline and they chug almost three times as long when I use an expensive Energizer Lithium.

The buil in USB Type A slot ensures you'll never have to carry adapter cables when transferring recordings and it records in a pretty efficient WMA format.
Depending on your profession and whether or not you'd ever have the necessity to serreptiously record a meeting, that Olympus could become the best $30 friend you'll ever meet.

I was in the market for one of these until I noticed I already have voice recording in my cell phone (Sony Ericsson P1i). With a 2gb flash card I have recorded a few hours with plenty of room and the audio quality is very good for spoken conversation.
