internal mini PCI express card whitelist question

#1 Post by xwray » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:35 pm

I have read where some wideband cards, for instance, will not work in the X200 (and others I believe) without throwing a BIOS error. I imagine that this is probably true for any device where LENOVO has their own branded part. Suppose I wanted to use one of the mini PCI slots for some other device (nothing in mind yet...asking just in case)...is the BIOS whitelist set up to complain about *all* non-Lenovo cards or will it allow the slot to be used for any other non-Lenove device?

thanks

MiniPCIe offers two bus connections, PCIe and USB, the behaviour depends on the type and on slot used.

WLAN slot checks PCIe device ID against whitelist and throws an error if not there. Which means USB devices don't throw an error - but without taping pin 20, BIOS will (wireless-)disable it, thinking nothing's there.
WWAN slot is basically vice-versa.

I remember there were some checks whether the device is 0x2yy type (network), but would have to look again whether it excludes other device types, or just throws the error right away.

There isn't much else one can put in these slots, though.
