I can't get Knoppix to boot.

#1 Post by Plinkerton » Fri Jan 21, 2005 5:09 am

I have a T42 2378-FVU. I just burned the Knoppix .iso image to a CD. I am using F12 to choose the boot destination. To boot from, I am choosing the HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GC4242N which is my CD drive. I burned a bootable file with IBM RecordNow! and I just used the Knoppix .iso file.

I have yet to find a real step-by-step how to of burning Knoppix, so I have no idea if I did everything right.

Is the .iso the ONLY thing I need to burn to the CD? Can an .iso file be bootable?

When I boot, I get a "Missing Operating System" message. Then I have push the power button to turn the computer off.

I don't know a whole lot about this, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for any help!

You need to burn the ISO as an image, not as an iso file. If you look at the disk and see the iso file then you did it wrong.

Not sure how RecordNow works, but there should be an option to burn an image to disk, burn a raw image, or something similar. Then you give it the iso and it builds an exact duplicate of the disk that the iso was burned from.

egibbs got it right.
If you look at the knoppix cd in windows explorer and see the iso file it is not burned correctly. When you look at the knoppix cd in windows the autorun should bring up an html page with instructions on how to boot knoppix. What happens when you try to read the disc in windows?

I definitely didn't burn an image. I can see the file.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll try to figure out how to burn an image. If I can't do it with IBM Recordnow, I'll download Nero.

Thanks guys. It worked perfectly. That was my first time ever seeing what Linux even looked like. It was quite interesting. I'm under the impression that it does not work with the Intel 2200BG Wifi right? I'll have to buy a PCMCIA card like Orinoco or something for it do work?

Thanks again.

Wow. This is exciting. I'm online using Knoppix right now. It's kinda neat.

Thanks again guys. Linux is neat. :)

If you grow to really like it you should try doing a full install so it will remember your customizations and it will run faster too.

I already do, but I know what you mean... :)

I have a question though. With windows, I use a Firewall, and all that stuff.

Is anything needed to safely be online using Knoppix?

No, because Knoppix runs from a cd and nothing can write to it so if something goes wrong then you just reboot and it is fresh again.
If you had Linux installed on your hard drive then you might want to setup a firewall. there are different ones depending on which distro you run and how much command line you want to use.
Be aware that if you install Knoppix to the HD it won't be the same as it is when run from cd.

Thanks. I won't be installing it. I just won't ever use it enough to justify that.

That thing in the Toys menu, called "bb" is amazing. That whole ascii art thing.

Coolest thing ever... :)

Hey Plink,
You know you can save the current configuration to either your hard disk or a USB key and then tell it to look for that on boot and it will retain your settings, bookmarks, etc.
Somewhere under the knoppix menu is the option to save and then at boot instead of just hitting enter issue something like "home=search" then enter. To be sure search for "knoppix cheat codes".
The USB key thing is cool becuase you can use any computer and it will like it is yours. 8)

Yeah I just read about that, and I'll have to do that soon. I just bought the book Knoppix Hacks, and it seems to have a lot of great tips in it for me to mess around with.

Having it save all my setting would be great.

Thanks.

Tried the Knoppix CD yesterday. Wow! I was amazed and it was fun. However I could never get Wireless network card to work with it. I have a regular network card in my desktop as well as WLAN but neither were IDed, so I could never connect to the internet with it. Any ideas of how to load the drivers for these devices? BTW, my WLAN card and Access Point has encrypted WEP, so that would be the next thing to overcome once I get drivers loaded.

It seems that it only works with certain Wifi cards. I've heard that my internal Intel 2200 BG card is not supported at all. Orinoco seems to be the consensus as the best. I have my connection wired right now, for the extra download speed, and being online in Knoppix.

I'd love to mess with some Kismet though. I'll have to check it out.

I have a question about using cheat codes. I'm going to try booting off a iso image on my HD. But, I also want to use myconfig=scan.

How do I use multiple cheat codes at one boot? I haven't tried it yet, but I figured I'd ask here first.

Do I just type in: knoppix myconfig=scan bootfrom blah blah?

Do I separate the cheat codes with a space? Or do I need to use some other command? I can't find this info anywhere. Surprisingly, not in the book Knoppix Hacks, either.

Thanks again,
Plink

Okay, I figured it out, that you just separate the cheat codes with a space. Everything seemed to work.

One other question though, if I boot from the iso image on my HD, do I have to worry about security? Or, is because the iso is only readable, and not writable, am I okay?

Thanks,
Plink

EDIT: Curious about one thing. I booted off the iso, and I can't access my main HD from Knoppix. It says "can't open /cd" or something like that. I don't remember.

Should I be able to access the HD?

What do you mean by "boot from the iso image on my HD"?
I have used knoppix when booted from a CD or after it was installed on the HD using the installer. Either time my HD partitions were mounted on the desktop and ready to access. If booting from the HD cheat codes are not needed.

From the CD, I can access my HD just fine. You can boot from the iso image on your hard drive by doing as follows:

at startup in Knoppix, type this: bootfrom=/dev/hda1/Knoppix.iso

That assumes that the Knoppix iso is in your hard drive root directory. I have mine in C:

When you do it this way, you can then eject the cd and use the cd drive for something else. You don't need to install it.

But, I've only tried that once, and it worked, but I couldn't access my main HD.

Thanks

I've never tried that trick but it sounds like it has some limitations.
If you want to fully install a Linux distro onto your hard disk I would recommend something other than Knoppix.
While Knoppix is excellent as a Live CD distro it is pretty plain when installed to the hard drive and there are better choices out there for that.
Suse also has a live CD version and when you get the full install version and install it, it is just like the live CD only there are more apps included.
Ubuntu also has a live cd and an install cd which provide a similar experience.
You could give these a look too.

Yeah, It seems to have some limitations, I was just getting sick of having the disc spin up and lag every so often. I'm not sure if I want to install Linux, because my HD is a bit small, and I don't know how often I'll actually use it, more than in just a learning matter. It's fun to tinker on, and learn how to use it, but I can't afford a few gigs of my HD space. :D

Thanks for the tips.

Yes seperate them with a space. myconfig is probabally not needed if you have a persistant home directory setup.
common cheats include lang=, vga=, ramdisk=, home=, acpi=,

If you can, get ahold of partiton magic and make a small (gig or 2) partiton for the Knoppix home and ramdisk and optional swapfile.

The Poor Mans Install with grub is the next step for you. It leaves the Windows installation and boot sector alone, has all the advantages of booting from cd, and is faster while freeing your cd drive.
