1440x1050 or 1024x768 X61T. Which is the better deal?

#1 Post by epu » Mon Feb 02, 2009 4:39 pm

I crave the extra screen real estate, but love the multitouch functionality of the X61T with the regular XGA Screen. Alas, there is no 1440x1050 X61 with multitouch. Some of you have worked with both. I've read opinions from years ago, but am curious to know what you all think now. I have the opportunity to "trade up" my current full equipped XGA X61T for a 1440x1050 one, without the multitouch.

What are you thoughts

One vote for the higher resolution. I don´t see any application for multitouch on such a small screen. Besides, in most cases mutlitouch would involve someone´s fingers on my screen and I really hate fingerprints on my screen

I was searching through the forums and noticed a lot of controversey regarding the bezel ungluing from the screen AND the lower third half of the screen dimming and fading. Have these problems been fixed since this time? The unit I'd be acquiring is new.

Well perhaps something like this will make me feel as if I still have a Multi-Touch display

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fit-Universal-Finge ... .m20.l1116

A finger stylus!!! I wonder if this would work?

Still, anyone have any idea whether those 1440x1050 displays are still prone to ungluing from the bezel?

Don't kid yourself, bezel issues are present on ALL varieties of X6x tablet units...

I've voted for SXGA+, but I'm a known high resolution addict. In my book, XGA is next to useless on a 12" LCD.

Good luck.

AFAIK the SXGA bezel issue has been identified and a solution has been available for some time already... See this thread...

Besides, please take into mind that the "MultiTouch" functionality on the X61T means pen + hand dual functionality, not the type of MultiTouch made famous by the iPhone.

There's a reason why the "holy grail" of ThinkPad modification is to retrofit the X60/1t FlexView SXGA+ panel into pretty much any other contemporary X series machine... it's that good.

When I had an X60t I went from the XGA-MT to SXGA+ screen, and not only didn't I regret the move one bit, I'd never buy an XGA tablet again.

I love the the ability to use my hand OR the pen. I am leaning toward swapping it for the SXGA version though. I may just purchase a fingertip stylus so I could still use "my fingers"

Just check to make sure that fingertip-stylus is a Wacom stylus, and not just a pressure one...

I like high resolution, but not on 12". Too much eyestrain. I would go for XGA, with or without the Multitouch. But I do realize I would forever be a minority on this topic in these forums.

Shouldn't the poll say 1400x1050? You probably got spoiled by widescreens (1440x900).

I used to think that 1280x800 on 12" was strainful but I am using an x61t with SXGA+ right now, and let me tell you, everything is so readable, crisp, and clear. It is so much better than what I expected. I also realize that the 1280x800 on 12" screen was a glossy screen with like 0º viewing angles, which is why I particularly hated it.

XGA is next to useless and the real estate from SXGA+ is so much more important than "wow i can move stuff around with my fingers."

Maybe. But everybody's eyesight is different. What suites me may not suite you. So if possible, it's better to try beforehand.

Besides, what looks gorgeous in short periods may cause more pain that you can imagine when the time is long enough. On the other hand, what looks weird at the first sight may later turn out to be much better than anything you've encountered before.

And here I declare the end of my meaningless post. : )

Again, sorry for bringing up an old thread again... I was torn between to better resolution vs the touch capabilities. With that said I think I'd have to go with the touch (lower resolution). The fear I have is that the brightness won't be good. I currently have an X31 and it's a bit dim at times. I'm really hoping that's not the case with the X61 tablets.

I understand battery saving but... ugh.

LCDs do get dimmer with age. Your X61T, regardless of resolution, will probably be somewhat brighter than your X31, even if you account for some light swallowed by the tablet digitizer.

How do the Tablets hold up to being physically touched constantly? I'd be kinda afraid to use the pen, especially the eraser part for fear I'm also erasing scratches into the screen. lol

Thanks for the info though.

The tablets have a special layer over the screen which is designed to handle touches.

That doesn't mean that you should not be gentle and careful, and avoid poking at the screen or pressing harder than necessary.

considering the rarity of 1400x1050 on a 12.1" and the fact that it is ips, I'd go for the 1400x1050. It's hard to say if we'll ever see anything with such high ppi ever again(~144?). I'm about to get a x60t sxga+, and I just got myself an idtech qxga for my t61p, thinking about how exactly i want to fit that, to say the least, it is amazing.

I'm considering modding a 12.1" resistive touch screen ontop of the sxga+. Feasible?
