how to pull out explorer bar?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:24 pm

how do i replace the library/personal folders bar with an actual explorer bar. i want the look of explorer.exe that was found in XP.
back in XP the option to remove my documents/personal folders was by going to Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types--> FOLDER, set explorer as default
in Windows 7, I don't see File Types option and instead I see Search option. Where is the Files Types option. I feel less productive not seeing where the heck I am navigating.

i know what you mean. just go to organize - folder and search options - general tab - and under navigation pane just check automatically expand to current folder. hope that helped!

i did that. but it doesn't help. my side bar is cluttered with the following folders:
- desktop
- network
- control panel
- recycle bin
- libraries
- favorites
this ends up restricting view of my computer -> c -> and whatever folder i navigate to.
how do i just pull out straight and only explorer of C drive. i don't want any other folders there. is there a registry hack to hide them?

I read somewhere here that the traditional Explorer is gone for good in Windows 7. That doesn't mean you can't do what you want, but there may not be much hope.

Windows Explorer in Vista was butchered badly enough for me (no up function, no cut, no copy, no past) that I found and purchased xPlorer2 as a replacement (http://zabkat.com/). There is a free version, but the paid version is not pricey and comes in 64-bit. I now use it 95% of the time. .... JDH

You can hide some folders within Libraries etc (right click>don't show in navigation pane), also, you "can" delete Libraries (it is just shortcut) from sidebar, but upon next explorer start the shortcuts reappear...

thank you for the advice JD but i really want to go with the new explorer and just make it a little bit more workable.

this still does not hide the libraries folder on the left panel. my goal is to remove all folders on the left panel and have only C drive showing like in the original windows explorer.

Well, I think you'll be disappointed for a while... Like me and others... W7 is still in beta, but somehow I think MS will follow explorer trend shown in Vista...

I heard that W7 RC version (probably no beta2) is coming out in 3-4 months, so we just have to wait and see what happens...

Do you know whether the RC will be freely available like the beta?

Using xplorer2 for XP and Windows 7

I've checked out xplorer2 on it's web site. The site says that one can use it for XP _and_Vista. Today I noticed it's on the list of applications that will work with the RC of Windows 7.

My question to you is, now that you've used xplorer2 for some time, how do you like it?

Pros? Cons?

I tried Vista briefly with my new W500 but went back to XP since it's what's on the rest of my ThinkPads, and Windows 7 is near. Thus I'm choosing to wait for the RC of Windows 7, which I plan to adopt straightaway. If indeed it's true that I can use xplorer2 for XP and Windows 7 that would be the best of all worlds, as then my explorer experience would be the same for all my ThinkPads.

What do you think, is this a good way to go?

I would go with the paid version since it has the most flexibility and a feature set that appeals to me.

Anyone else here with xplorer2 experience? I would enjoy hearing your take on it.

Thanks

I think the most succinct answer is that I rename Windows Explorer to be Microsoft Windows Explorer, and renamed xplorer2 to be Windows Explorer so that when I point to Windows Explorer in my array of shortcuts, I land in xplorer2.

I now use it to the exclusion of Microsoft's offering. Many pros. And, I use the Professional version - well worth the money.

Two cons:
(1) Double clicking a ZIP file will not open WinZip, although the file *will* open. I must right click on the file and open with WinZip.
(2) Some files/folders created by Windows do not show up in xplorer2 (like config.msi). Sometimes (once a month or so) I use Microsoft Windows Explorer to remove these tempfiles. Total Commander also works, and I also have a license for that.

Which brings to mind the question, where does Total Commander fit into all of this?

I've seen the name, understand it's a file manager, but not looked into it after noticing your posts, as well as a few others referencing good success with xplorer2.

Cheers...

I purchased Total Commander because it allows me to find differences in huge, complex file stores. I still do that, but today I also use SyncBack Pro (a versatile replacement to Windows Briefcase). I also find that Total Commander shows me files that neither Microsoft Windows Explorer, nor xplorer2 show me. I got the license some time ago, so I just keep it. You may not need it. ... JDH
