Installing Win XP SP2 on A31p (DISASTER)!!

#1 Post by Richard Beeson » Fri Jan 21, 2005 8:25 pm

Has anyone else had a problem installing XP SP2 on an A31p? I wasn't going to do it, because on the IBM site several problems are listed. But I went ahead and tried in order to upgrade my RSJ CD burning software, which wants SP2 to use USB drives. But the installation was a catastrophe. Toward the end, after over an hour of carefully preparing, setting restore points, etc., then waiting for the instalation process to do its thing, it was going through the produre of loading processes, the last thing the installation does. (It had already backed up old files and installed the new ones.) Then I got an error message: "Migrate.exe: entry point not found. Entry point GETUMS could not be located in dynamic link library MSDAR.DLL. "

At that point the installation was dead in the water. Installation could not continue, and I couldn't close it. I couldn't kill the process, or shut down the computer. I had to pull the plug. And you can guess what happened next. Backups and restore points activated. Fortunately I did multiple restore points in early stages of the process, because only one of them turned out to be usable.

Until I know what caused that error message, I'm not going near SP2 again. I'd sure liike to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

Installing Win XP SP2 on A31p (DISASTER)!!

Good Afternoon Richard,

I can not confirm Your experience:

Summer last Year I did a complete and fresh install of XP (German version) on an A31P (2653-R5G), did all the updates (hardware (!) and software-related) and installed all necessary use-related software (Office software, ftp-software, pre-print-related tools, system-diagnosis tools, security (AV, firewall) tools).

The machine is used on road and docked in a docking station, linked with a soho-network and - via ISDN - to an office-network (VPN-wise) as well as to the internet. We experienced quite some "troubles" (Powermanagement, Norton) but installation of XP SP2 in autum 2004 proceeded without any hassel.

Are You sure, Your system was "consistent" before updating?

Friedrich,

The system was perfectly stable, using SP1. Whatever problems cropped up from time to time related to varous utilities I was using, which I have always been able to work around. I unloaded all utilities and running programs before attempting the SP2 installation.

XP SP2 on A31p

Well Richard,

at least as my update did not produce any problem and as there are not very many messages concerning a non-functional XP/SP2 with the A31P, there must be a (reason for the) difference, either hardware or software, or some inconsistency of Your system...

May be it makes sense not only deactivating but also unstalling tool by tool, until You succeed....

Did You read the event-/system-/security-protocol ? What does it say?
Did You test Your systemhardware (Pc-Doc; Check-It ...)?

Is the BIOS and embedded controller flashed to the latest?
Should be done before SP2

Another possible issue is trouble with pre-sp2 resident software such as antivirus or security software (including old IBM client security software)
