flexview UXGA screen issues

The screen on my t42p is pink when I turn it down, and when it first starts up, and it gets its cloour back in a few seconds. Does this mean the back light is going? I'm a handy person but not yet to the extent of taking laptops apart. Is replacing the back light something I could consider doing?

The screen was the primary reason I got a thinkpad; I do CAD and refuse to work with less than UXGA. I also hate the short screen, so I want to hang on to 4:3 as long as I can. I'm sure when this machine goes I'll be looking for a t60p to see if it will tide me over until 4:3 comes back into fashion (I am holding my breath).

Is the UXGA screen in t60p the same as the one I have in my t42p? Mine is a UXGA flexview, but how do I know if it is IPS?

Yes, pink means that the backlight is aging. I have a similar problem with my T42p too. Mine is used for about 10,000 hours. What is your working time ?

There are some threads in T4x forums. People do not recommend to self replace backlight since it is very complex work. A forum member Jamiphar has a topic on backlight replace work in Market place forum. Please, contact him for more details.

I tried changing out a backlight in a 14.1" XGA T42 without success. The problem is not so much the complexity as the delicate nature of the work. The glass CCFL tube is about the diameter of a #2 pencil lead and about 11" long. It is very easy to break! The connecting wires are also skinny and easy to break. You have to solder the connecting wires to the heavier wire coming out of each end of the CCFL tube. There are silicone insulator caps that slide over the connecting wires and cover the soldered connection and each end of the glass tube. After soldering the wires and sliding the connectors in place, you have to fit the assembly back into the bottom of the LCD panel and replace the cover over the backlight.

Here is my experience:
I broke the original CCFL tube removing it. I also broke the connecting wires a couple of times and had to find some insulated wire to extend the wires that were left. One of the original silicone caps was damaged when I removed it, and the replacement caps were too fat to fit the assembly back into the display lid. I had to trim some of the silicone off of each cap to get the CCFL tube to fit back in the bottom of the display lid. After I got it all back together, it did not light. Not sure what happened. At this point I just bought a used display lid complete and successfully installed that instead.

Normally I would recommend replacing the entire display lid, but since you have a Flexview UXGA display, it is worth it to try and get the backlight changed in it.

Aside- my kids are from Vietnam- adopted. Their picture graces my desktop. We'd love to go back there someday- beautiful country. We've never been north though, they're from Vung Tau.

So mine is a 15" UXGA flexview, but is an ISP? Any guesses how much longer the back light will last at this point? I have no idea how many hours it's logged. I'd say not more than 6,000, but that's a total guess. It looks fine on full brightness though.
