I'm piggybacking on this thread because I am having a similar issue.
After cloning with Acronis TrueImage, I checked the new HD under disk management (using Windows Vista Business). It says Healthy EISA Configuration. It doesn't have the NTFS hard drive partition with System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.
I did test the new HD and it didn't work. It booted to Lenovo rescue & recovery to restore to factory settings.
I made a boot disc from Acronis.
Now what do I do?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: having trouble with disc cloning.
I used an actual Acronis bootable CD that someone loaned me. Not a trial version.
Thanks for your help.
At least we learned that those trial versions don't do the trick.

Re: having trouble with disc cloning.
I see your latest clone attempt worked.
FWIW, "any disadvantage do just doing a full, fresh reinstall of everything?) " One big disadvantage, you have to download and install all those service packs and patches all over again. And any app=specific thins, like the exception dictionary in your word processor, have to be rebuilt or restored. OTOH you get a nice clean registry.
