thinkpad 600 not detecting HDD

#1 Post by wirelessxpert » Sat Jun 05, 2004 6:50 pm

I have a thinkpad 600 model 2645-85u. I ran disc deframenter on it and now on startup it only shows the thinkpad/IBM logo and then some other configuration comes up. If I boot to easy setup and test the system it shows no HDD but then I can select restart and it will startup and run fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

600 Startup

I don't know why defragmenting a disk could cause this problem, but I would recommend the following:

Go into Easy Setup and select "Initialize". I believe that sits in the System family.

If that doesn't fix the problem, I would try booting from a floppy (or a Repair Console from Windows 2000 or XP), and run "FDISK /MBR" (without the quotes, of course).

Hope this helps.

Initialize is in the easy setup when I click on it it just beeps. and then it continues to not recognize the HDD. I am not saying that disc defrag did this I was just letting you know that is the last thing that was done before this happened. BTW I am running Wind 98SE i dont have a recovery disc and I have not hooked up a FDD to the unit although I do have one if needed. Once I get it booted by going to restart it works fine. I just need to know how to configure it so that it recognizes the HDD it shows that there isnt one yet works?

Try removing the CD drive from the machine, then booting into EZsetup. Is the hard drive recognized now?

If not, then try reseating the hard drive.

Last, try going into the bios and hitting that initialize button. When it's done, shut the machine off. Then boot directly into the bios again. Is the drive recognized now?

I am having the same problem. I just put on Windows 98se and was trying to get rid of some startup troubles, turned off some things in Device Manager, rebooted and now the system will not recognized my HDD. Maybe my HDD went bad? Please let me know if your problem gets solved. it may help me out too. Thanks
