USB Hard Drive for 365XD?

#1 Post by Prolehma » Sat Feb 07, 2009 3:07 pm

Hello!

Today I`m asking, is there any way to get connect USB Hard Drive to IBM ThinkPad 365XD? If there is, then what I have to do to do that? I know that I need some kind of ``special things`` but I`m not sure what. So if you can help me with that problem, please help.

Thank you.

You can buy a PCMCIA card with USB ports. However, I'm not sure whether those USB hard drives will work with NT.

Hello,

sorry to tell you but you can forget adding a USB port to a 365XD.
The 365XD has a 16-bit PCMCIA slot, not a 32-bit slot.
The USB ports were designed in the time 16-bit slots were already considered to be "ancient" technology. So no manufacturer ever produced a 16-bit PCMCIA card with a USB port.
Moreover, a 16-bit slot would, even at maximum throughput rate, not be able to reach the specs for a USB port. Another reason it didn't (and doesn't) make sense to make 16-bit PCMCIA card with a USB port.

I have a 365XD also. To transfer data from/to the 365XD, I use either of two ways:

1. via a network connection (I have wireless and cabled network on my 365XD using standard PCMCIA cards)
2. using a PCMCIA Compact Flash adapter and a 8Gb CF card (CF card used as removable media)

This works well under Win98 and should also work under NT.
Kind regards,

Erik

Can you explain what you mean about the admin password?
Do you mean the password for NT?

I still think even if you follow emeu1's suggestions that NT may very well be a stumbling block in that the PCMCIA cards won't have drivers for NT.

You might want to look into http://www.delilinux.org/

I mean that when I have to log in, I can`t log in as admin because I have forgot that password. So I need to log in as guest and as a guest I can`t do anything. For example: I can`t change my current OS. You know ``You don`t have right`s to do that`` or something like that. And that`s really annoying.

But that Linux and CF thing sounds good, thanks about that.
