Wanted: T40 power repair in San Jose area

#1 Post by John H » Sun Feb 08, 2009 11:36 am

My venerable T40 doesn't power up from either AC adapter or battery, so it needs to be fixed and my eyes are getting too bad to do it myself. Anybody know a decent T40 fixer in the San Jose area? The guy I used to use went back to Taiwan when the local economy went sour.

There is a place in Chico called Hammerhead Technologies. But you have to remove the MB or they charge an additional fee to take the computer apart.

There's a "laptop repair" ad that's appeared in the San Jose Murky News from time to time. It's part of Central Computers. Main store is in Santa Clara on Stevens Creek Blvd, between Saratoga Ave. and San Tomas Expy. I have not personally used them but have suggested them to one other person here on TPF - not sure if the member ever used their services.

The $139 flat rate repair excludes any motherboard or LCD problems, so with a dead system, the chances are that there's something on the motherboard which has gone bad. I'm not so sure if it's as simple as the T23 that I brought back from the dead yesterday (with exactly the same symptoms as you describe). There were three loose inductors which required a little bit of clean-up and re-soldering.

There's a guy, Baisley, on the Market forum selling T4x motherboards

Getting it repaired by Hammerhead may well be cheaper. I had an R52 mobo repaired for $99.- incl. 1-way shipping.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
