Recovery partition gone . . .

#1 Post by Wayne » Tue Feb 10, 2009 5:33 pm

I've had my R-40 for a few years, I got it refurbed from IBM, great little machine. A year or so ago it was running slow (obviously my fault) so I decided to run the recovery partition. Everything went perfectly, got all the XP Pro updates, reinstalled all my "stuff", and it's running like a champ. But I found that upon recovery, the recovery partition was not recreated. Is there any way to recreate it or maybe get a recovery CD from IBM. I'd like to put it back to day one when it had the recovery partition and the OS partition. Just in case.

I've since replaced the 40 Gig HD with a 160 and have kept the 40 as a backup (I cloned the 40).

Any thoughts?

As you cloned the 40 Gig to the 160 Gig, did you also clone the service partition?
Cloning an R40 with the Predesktop area (HPA) BIOS settings set to normal may not work with some cloning software.

After I did the system restore the recovery partition was not created. The recovery partition was gone. I'm well familiar with cloning, my ThinkCenter and wife's ThinkPad have the recovery partition and they are also cloned. Both partitions, active in NTFS and the recovery in FAT32 are cloned. But when I ran the system recovery on my ThinkPad, it put the machine back to day one but the recovery partition was gone.

I'm wondering if I can get a recovery CD from IBM, or create one.
