XGA LCD on T43 that use to have SXGA+ ??

#1 Post by Xenomorph » Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:47 pm

I just got a T43 on the cheap. Why so cheap?

The LCD is cracked.

It's has a 14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050) LCD right now.

Checking eBay, there are a lot of XGA LCDs for $30-$60.

Personally, at ~14", I'd probably like 1024x768 better than a tiny 1400x1050.
However, the SXGA+ monitors seem to be in the $120+ area. That's *way* to much to dump into this system in my opinion.

What would it take to use a 1024x768 XGA LCD with this laptop? Just a new LCD? A new LCD and Inverter board?

A new LCD and matching XGA cable, and you're all set.

How do I know which part is the XGA cable?

I believe the monitors are hooked up like this:
Motherboard -> Bendy Ribbon -> Inverter -> Wire -> LCD
Which is the XGA cable?

On eBay, I saw some LCDs that were "just" LCDs. Obviously that won't work.

I also saw some LCDs that were in the plastic lid still that had everything up to the "bendy ribbon". Will that be good enough?

This ThinkPad has the Radeon X300 also. Will that make a difference?

What you're referring to as a "bendy ribbon" is the actual cable...

FRU for it is 91P6941 or 91P6889.

At today's prices, I'd just buy a whole lid with XGA LCD and cable, but that's me...

Hope this helps.

Does ~$50 shipped sound fair for LCD+Lid assembly?

Certainly better than the $120 SXGA+ listings.

I'm sure that you could do better than $120 for a SXGA+ LCD, try posting a WTB ad in the forum's Marketplace...

And yes, $50 sounds good for a complete lid shipped, but if and when you decide to sell that T43 there will be issues...

My $0.02 only...

The new screen works great (the install process took a while).

Going to 2 Gigs RAM really makes the system scream.

I'm waiting for a new 120 Gig Fujitsu drive to show up now.

Nice up-down grades! The LCD swap takes a little time, but it's not that hard - I personnally don't like having to route and connect the wifi antennas. Good to see you found an enconomical way to keep the T43 alive.
