an idea, buy cheap R51 and upgrade with new cpu, ram and hdd

#1 Post by user303 » Sat Jan 22, 2005 1:55 pm

Ive been wondering:

the higher models with 735+ cpu's all come with a premium.
So I thought, what would happen, if I bought a standard R51 (centrino 715 with 512mb ram) for 1100€ and then buy an intel 745 processor, 512 mb ram and a 7k hardrive for all approx 500€. So I'end up with a pretty high end version for 1600€, for which I wouldnt even get a low end T42.

Will this work? Would the cooling solution in the R51 handle the 745 processor? Will changing the processor void my warranty (mostprob yes) ?
and is this a complete and utter stupid idea?

For english-men:
I think the cooling is no problem, because somebody already done that:
http://thinkpad-forum.de/viewtopic.php? ... ht=t40+cpu (german), in fact that was a T40, but I think there are no problem with R51 too. Warranty? I think that could be described there too, but not sure.
Hard Disk and RAM are no problem.
Wheter that's a good idea or not? Do you realy save money with that action? You must compare that for your own, perhaps you save money, if you sell the parts that were in when you bought it: CPU, HD

Hope I helped.

Sorry for my English, I speak german.

Servus (und Gruetzi)!

Why not buy the cheap R51 now and upgrade it in 2 or 3 years? That way you preserve the warranty and when you upgrade it later the parts will be less expensive and maybe even faster.

Yes if they are still available then, that may be the best idea. At another Point if the are rare then, they are much more expensive than now.
