Vista lockout after signon...recent update. HELP!!

#1 Post by themightyquinn » Wed Feb 11, 2009 8:40 pm

Alright, so I just installed new updates for Vista. It's 64-bit Ultimate. I shut down and restarted, then after restart I shut down the computer from the login screen. I just tried to start it back up and login. Then before I get my desktop a window pops up and says that this version of windows is not valid/compatible, and that I only have limited features until it fix it. Only problem is that the only thing I can do is get online, but only if I click "Search online for an answer." Otherwise I have no background or icons/start menu/taskbar. Just a black screen. If I close the window it returns me to the login screen.

I don't really know what the deal is. I can't get to anywhere else on my computer, or do what the Microsoft suggested "help" is, because all I have is a freakin black screen. No right-clicking, no ctrl-alt-del to open task manager or anything. It's a clean installed version of Vista, been that way for months with no problems. I actually fubar'd the clean install registration, and had to call microsoft to validate Vista...so I couldn't tell you why it all of a sudden thinks it's invalid.

Help!!

During the login screen Vista continues to install the updates downloaded within the previous session. If you have Vista installation media, boot into it and choose to repair the existing installation. At least this should make your system accessible for you. You might have to call M$ again though.

I believe in U.S. one could purchase an installation media of Vista at the cost of the media (about 5$ or so). In my opinion letting Vista repair the installation is the best thing you could do now.
