Yes, every notebook has a fan as far as I know.plucky duck wrote:as the title says.
Since 80486 a fan is required for the x86 CPUs and compatible.

We are (of course) primarily discussing Thinkpads here, but as far as your statement that "every notebook has a fan", there are exceptions, such as:
Motion Computing M1400 Tablet PC with ULV 1.0 and 1.2...NO FAN at all.
Passive cooling only.

Tablet PC is not a notebook, there is no compromise.aamsel wrote:We are (of course) primarily discussing Thinkpads here, but as far as your statement that "every notebook has a fan", there are exceptions, such as:

What is the fan utilisation on the X40?
I was wondering does the fan on the X40 constantly spin/variable speeds or are there periods when it doens't spin at all when idle?
I used to like my dell as the fan was hardly used only when the cpu heated up and needed to remove the heat it started to spin or spin variably as needed, whereas my work laptop a Toshiba Tecra the fan constantly spins and if idle still remains spinning at a low speed!
Thanks guys.

Convertible Tablet PC is the same [censored] thing as a notebook. Regular Tablet PC with a keyboard attached is the same thing also, don't kid yourself.

Reason why I even asked the question in the first place was I beleive I recall someone in previous thread mentioned that the 1.2Ghz and above X40 had a fan and the lower model 1Ghz did not. I was considering one that was a 1Ghz model.
The pros of battery savings probably wouldn't outweigh the cons of possible long term damage from heat I'm guessing? *shrugs*
