T41 bios takes too long before windows starts up!

#1 Post by radiator » Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:27 pm

Before my windows starts up it takes bios long time to let me call it end it job. When I press the power button I see the IBM logo and thinkpad below, up on the right centrino logo etc. At the bottom there is 'press to interrupt normal startup. The whole process of endin job by bios take approx. 35 sec. To me it's far too long. Do your ibms also need 30 sec to start booting windows?? I changed from quick to diagnostic type for bios and learnet that the bios makes check for ram and for extended ram, after that it just does nothing as I think and then windws logo shows to my eyes. What can be wrong with my bios? or what is worse with my small little balack box??

My T42 acts almost the same when it got USB Flash Disk attached on the USB port.
You may try to exclude all un-needed boot device in BIOS, just left the CD ATAPI and HDD 0 as boot devices.

Hope it helps

It may have problems finding a bootable HD. Make sure your HD is error free.

I forgot to tell you tha my cdrom works well but not in my laptop as One channel on ATA controler is broken. So when I take out cdrom IBM logo showes only for 3 or 4 sec. But when my cdrom is taken out thinkpad looks awful. There is no option i bios to disable olny one channel and don't know what to do my have my laptop good looking and booting up quickly. If I has a broken one I could make a test wheter having a broken cdrom inside resolves my problem or not, or simply the only solution would be finding sth to replace my cdrom with to get rid of that ugly hole.

Still didn't manage to solve my problem. if I take out my cdrom it boots immediately if not the first screen with ibm logo stayes up to almost 40 sec. I excluded all other than HHD devices but still the problem remains unsolved

Your CDROM drive is defective or it is not properly set up for use with the T41. I have had the same problem when installing some Pioneer and HP DVD burners into Ultrabay 2000 systems. There is a long delay before the Windows logo appears or in some cases, the system does not boot at all. My guess is that the DVD drives are set as slave devices while the laptop assumes that they are masters. You can either keep the existing drive and live with the delay, use the travel bezel as Harryc has linked to above or purchase an IBM branded Ultrabay Slim optical drive.

I took out my dvdrom and paled it into t43 where it worked fine. So my dvd is fine. The guy that sold it to me said there was sth wrong either with cold joints or with one channel na the controler. But he din't want to repair it so decided to sell it cheaplly. If it so happened that I would need cdrom I will force myself to buy a new motherboard, for the meantime I don't need it but I need to take care its look.
