upgrading from T60 to T400?
upgrading from T60 to T400?
im looking at upgrading my current T60 to a T400 to use as my main workstation plus for light gaming. i've heard the advanced mini dock i current have will possibly work with a T400 --can anyone confirm that?
atm i am running vista using NHC/rmclock to slow do my fan management (for some reason NHC alone with vista just doesnt work with rmclock!) and have a ACPI profile for my T60 to use in NHC, is there any such thing available for the T400 as i'd want a silent laptop as possible when doing day to day stuff.
for reference my t60 always hovers around 55C and the fan is always on, albeit its not *that* loud.

That's correct. I'm using a T6x mini-dock with my T400.skanky wrote:i've heard the advanced mini dock i current have will possibly work with a T400 --can anyone confirm that?

Yes, the minidock of the T60 will work with the T400.
I'd expect that the T400 with the Pxxx series CPUs will be cooler and quieter than the T60.

T400 is definitely quieter and cooler.
I had a T60 and upgraded cpu to T7200 and like yours, temp is around 55 - 60 I can hear the fan going. Now I have a T400 with P8400 cpu and all I can hear is my hard drive!!! Even when the fan is on, the wind coming out is barely warm.

quieter than a t60? nice!
do you guys need to run tpfancontrol or any other fan utility to get this lower noise?

Re: upgrading from T60 to T400?
May be I am not pushing my T400 hard enough, but if and when the fan was on, the air coming out is **barely** warm. So no, I don't use tpfancontrol. Also, my T400 has a P8400 cpu, not the T9xxx ( with 6Mb cache ).

You will find that your T400's base is less rigid than your T60's. But this will be offset by the fact that the T400's screen casing is far more durable. You will still, however, seek mental assistance when you first attempt to type on the keyboard. I advise purchasing a T61 NMB keyboard.

Re: upgrading from T60 to T400?
During normal use, about 10 programs running including IE a database and a word processing program the T60p upgraded to the T7600 C2D processor feels barely warm running at 120 degrees. The T400 with the P9600 processor running almost the same load feels cold. I don't know what the temperature is because I don't have any fan control program running. I have not spent as much time with the T400 as with the T60p though.

Re: upgrading from T60 to T400?
i currently have a 120gb wd scorpio 7200rpm drive, been reading around that higher capacity 5400rpm drives (ie 200gb) arent all that much slower than what i would have due to platter size being bigger(?), anyone able to shed some light on that and advice on what to get --i'd like quiet as i can get, but not at the expense of a OS that crawls along!
an ssd is out of the question, too much money and not enough space for my needs!
i have a t60 ultrabay hdd caddy that i'd like to reuse, will it work? also interesting comment about the t61 keyboard swap, ive had no issues with my t60 keyboard --is it compatible with the t400?

Re: upgrading from T60 to T400?
I have been using the Hitachi 7K200 200gb drive. This drive to me is silent. I don't have much experience with other SATA rotational drives. The Samsung SSD as used in the X300 is completely silent.
The T6x 2nd hard drive adapter will not work in the new T series ThinkPads. This new series now use a SATA interface.
The keyboard for the T400 has the same connector but I have not tried a T60 keyboard in the T400. There is a updated keyboard for the T400 that is constructed like a T6x keyboard to produce less flex. This updated keyboard may weigh slightly more. I installed this newly revised keyboard in the T400 and can say that flex is reduced.

But the connector between the 2nd HD ultrabay adapter and the T6x is not SATA (there's a SATA/PATA bridge in the HD adapter).skanky wrote:but my t60 uses sata drives though?
