T41 Processor upgrade - worth it?

#1 Post by imcobarn » Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:11 pm

Hi!
I read the previous thread on cpu upgrade (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 71#p488071) and got interested.

Do you know what kind of performance difference would you expect with upgrade from 1.6 ghz. I see 1.8 and 2.0 cpus have 2mb L2cache vs. 1mb on 1.6 model.

Also I found on eBay this SL7EP 1700mhz and SL7EN 1800mhz that has 2mb cache, I guess my question is would it be worth time (and $30-$40) to upgrade to one of these from 1600mhz (for extra 1mb L2 and 100-200mhz). Or would I need to get 2000mhz to even notice anything.

And I see in the list M765 2100mhz (SL7V3 and SL7UZ) at 400 FSB, would that work on T41?
Thanks.

For current prices, sure. Dunno how much 2.1's cost, they work too though.

1.8 Dothan runs cooler and quieter than 1.6 or 1.7 Banias that T41s were shipped. This is a cheap upgrade nowadays, although you're not likely to feel the difference in speed itself.

Thanks

O.k. I have another question. I have found 1800mhz socket 479 cpu (it is SL8QZ) (OEM) supposedly pulled from Acer laptop.
On http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In ... processors page it says it is Pentium M 745A and all other specs are the same as other two 1800s, Will this fit my T41?
Also how does it compare to SL7EN (which has B1 steping), what is the difference?
thanks.

There may not be bios support for that cpu. Somebody apparently had success with a 725a in a T40, even though I didn't think that had bios support either. It can be worked around, but initially the speed will be stuck at 600mhz. I am running a 715a in my T40 right now, which wasn't supported.

Don't get anything ending in "A". Go for a straight 715, 725, 735, 745 or 755. The 765 gets awful hot in a T4x.
