Streaming Video with SXGA+ Problem

#1 Post by mpcook » Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:04 pm

I am unable to get streaming video to work with my T23 SXGA+ in full screen mode. I have 1 GB ram. The video image will just stop. Has anyone been successful at this with the SXGA+ T23, and if so, how did you tweak settings to get it to work?

Thanks
Mike

Good luck with that...I doubt that you'll get it to work without locating some seriously modded drivers for Savage S3...I've read that these are available, but have never bothered with them...

Have you eliminated a slow network connection as the culprit?

I think the T23 GPU isn't powerful enough to push out full screen streaming video. I was running XP with 1GB RAM and updated drivers and it was a no go. My X23 with a slower CPU and less memory had no problems. That's why I think its the GPU.

How about the HDs? Do both machines have HDs with equal performance?

Took me a little while to find an SXGA+ T23 (1.13Ghz) with 1GB and updated with XP SP3, IE7, WMP11 and the latest Netflix video program. On my ~1MB DSL connection, I can get Netflix to stream fullscreen with both 16-bit and 32-bit color depth using the standard S3 video drivers (6.13.10.1224) provided with the IBM install. I've only seen 1 or 2 stutters in the 30 Rock video, which may be explained from some other activity on my ethernet network going on. The XP desktop is the default setup (ibmtheme), there's about 36 processes running (AVG 8.0 is the only major program) and the T23 is plugged into a 10Mbps ethernet switch.

I will say that the video quality is around VHS EP; quite fuzzy/pixelated but no hangups unless I click on the image. Doing that will "pause" the playback.

The curious thing about this, I can stream full screen on the XGA T23 1.13 Ghz w DSL via b wireless, when I put the same hard drive into the 1.20 Ghz with SXGA+ and g wireless, install the IBM drivers for the video and wireless card, it can't go full screen. I will try to replicate Ray's install and see if something there makes a difference.

Same here: my X23 with 866MHz CPU and 640MB RAM has no problem playing Youtube videos full screen, 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM SXGA+ T23 though makes it a slide show. Tried XGA T23 also, no change. Both are done using 2200BG wireless card and 2MB DSL connection. You can see both laptops more specific config in my signature. I think the S3 chip hasn't got enough oomph or the drivers are not well developed (tried both IBM latest and Chrometal ones).

Just an update on this, I have searched for drivers and tried a variety of things but so far the XGA T23 does streaming video much better than the SXGA, and it will also do it full screen, which the SXGA does not appear to do.

XP SR2 on both the XGA and SXGA.

Too bad they didn't put Geforce 2 Go or Ati Mobility Radeon (like on X22-24 series) on T23. It'd be helluva machine.

I have replaced the inverter and the symptoms persist. I am not sure it's worth putting in another LCD assembly, because it's not so simple and by then, the amount of time sunk into it is more than the value of a working T23. Will see if my son wants to use it, or may sell for parts (now have two good inverters).

If the video stream is flash based you can try to disable the hardware acceleration, it makes youtube videos in full screen possible on my T21 900MHz, with the even more crappier 8mb video card, it is XGA tough.
