Can Access Connections handle 2 simultaneous network conns?

#1 Post by XCoalMiner » Sat Jun 05, 2004 10:58 pm

I am trying to figure out how to setup a location profile in Access Connections for two simultaneously active network connections: a wireless connection, and a hard-wired ethernet LAN, both active at the same time.

I can't see how to do this, ... under the Adapter tab, you need to choose to 'use the adapter with the fastest speed' or 'use the adapter with the highest priority level'. Either choice limits you to one connection.

When I setup or change AP configurations, I use both wired and wireless connections, to be able to check the wireless, while configuring via the wired.

Yes, I do this at work because we have two different subnets. You just set the wireless radio not to automatically be disconnected and turn off choosing the fastest connection. Then you can hook to the wireless first and the wired second (I haven't tried it the other way around, but I'm fairly sure it works too)

I can see how to not automatically disconnect the radio, bit I cannot see how/where to turn off choosing the fastest connection, ... the choice is a one-or-the-other bulleted-list, and either choice sounds like it chooses/uses one adapter over the other.

BTW, the type of connection I choose is 'Best Available Wired or Wireless LAN', that is the only type where both radio and wired adapter show up in the list to choose switching rule/network adapter, on 2nd page. Any ideas?

On the Connection Status screen, MenuBar Location Switching, turn off automatic switching.

I see your problem with the other part... but I don't face it because I don't have "Automatic Connection Type" turned on when I set up my profiles. What you need to do is this:

When you setup a New profile, on the first screen for "Type of Network Connection" select which connection (wired or wireless) to use. Don't leave it at "Best Available..." On the next screen, make sure that "Disconnect from the network when I switch profiles" is unchecked. The rest of the setting up the profile should be however you need it.

If you want to convert an "Automatic Connection Type" back to the type you need to keep concurrent connections, Select the use fastest connection but only leave one adapter checked so that it forces one type. When you go back to edit that profile, you'll find it as a set adapter profile and make sure the "disconnect for the network when I switch profiles" is unchecked. Don't hit the "Covert this connection to automatic type" otherwise you'll be back where you started from.
