R51 motherboard flexing problem

#1 Post by zmyx » Wed Feb 18, 2009 9:11 am

Have anyone here ever faced a motherboard flexing problem with R51?

my R51 was working fine until one day it refused to turn on. A hard push above the CPU fan made it turned on occasionally but the problem got worse after a few days. Sometimes I had to remove the AC power and plug it back in in order to make it possible to power up. There was also a kind of clicking/ticking noise (about 2Hz) coming somewhere near the CPU but I really can't tell where exactly. Also if the pressure above the CPU is released then the machine would suddenly turned off too so my guess is that there is a broken lines/contact somewhere.

Since I was not able to fix it I sent the motherboard to a repair service and it was fixed. The guy said that he soldered three chips to fix it and there were no components replaced.

The reason I'm asking about this here is just my curiosity. I just want to know what part on the motherboard could be the problem so that if it happen again I will not have to pay 100 Euro for a fixing service.

Thanks!

If it's an ati gpu then that very likely is the problem, *the* gpu problem, where the gpu solderballs come loose. Happens to T4x's all the time. See the stickied threads at the top of the T4x forum, there's one for the problem and one for the fix.
