You may have noticed that the battery comes with it's own warranty, separate of your ThinkPad. Because used batteries are officially classified as "spent batteries" under the hazardous waste laws, they fall under difference governmental regulations. Thus sicne they are considered "hazardous waste" Lenovo is asked not to request the batteries to be shipped back to them. They ask the consumer to properly dispose of the battery to keep as many of them out of general transport as much as possible.
