WD Scorpio Black 320GB Strange Beep.

#1 Post by agarza » Fri Feb 20, 2009 3:53 pm

Yesterday I installed a new WD Scorpio Black drive on my T61 (8997CTO). Installed XP just fine.
Today I installed Windows 7 beta on another partition, working fine.

Thing is when I restart the machine there's a strange beep sound coming where the HDD is located, this happens when Windows 7 completely exits and there's a black screen before the Lenovo and Thinkpad logos come on the screen, and then there's a sound as if it's something loose where the HDD is. I didn't had that previous beep with the original 80GB my T61 came with. Should I be concerned? The beep is kinda annoying.

One thing I noticed is that with Windows 7, the restarting takes more time, because there's a delay when the "Z" icon is lit, then it's turned off, in windows xp restarting is much more fast. I'm thinking maybe Windows 7 code makes the rebooting a little more slowish and possibly there's a loss of current power to the HDD which in turn gives that beep indicating there's no power to function properly, I don't know I have never had this issue before. I don't know if this is the same with Vista because I don't use it. Maybe I will try to install it later.

I've haven't updated my T61 BIOS, should I? The one installed is the 2.12 (7LETB2WW) 2008-02-20 and the EC version is 1.08

My external WD disk (USB 2.0) exhibits just the same behavior on power-on (it´s 3.5'' though...). And I have Win 7 installed as my main setup. Since I installed it just after receiving the HD, I can´t say if it´s related to the OS (I would say rather not since this happens even before the OS has started booting up). As for the delay of Win 7 on shut down, it´s nothing to worry about. I have the same experience with Win 7 and also this sometimes happens with Vista too.

Cheers,

Marin

Well thanks marin for the tip, although what i'm referring to when i say is the delay on the reboot is just when the os has finished 'unloading' stuff, for example when xp reboots it almost immediately show the lenovo screen, but on win7 it does not. i may try installing my recovery dvds for vista that i made myself (I have barely used vista as a primary os).

On concern with the drive, its bloody fast but it has the typical wind sound present on 7200rpm, so I may switch later to another wd scorpio blue drive, maybe the 500gb or swap back the original. it's really frustrating having to start installing devices and programs.

Yes, I´m referring to that too :)

I reinstalled via Recovery CD's, and at first when I was on R&R there was a beep when the machine rebooted.
But when Vista is up and running rebooting the machine does not make a beep at all, I'm thinking maybe there will be a firmware update either BIOS or HDD via Lenovo to get rid of the beep, although I'm unsure why there has not been a single thread about this issue. I will post a video soon about this.

Maybe slightly off topic: does Lenovo provide HD firmware updates for any other HDs except the ones originally shipped with their laptops?

Thanks,

Marin
