X61 7675 CTO LCD Need Replacement. How hard is this to do?

#1 Post by kennyschiff » Sat Feb 21, 2009 11:34 am

I dropped my X61 and the LCD is now cracked. The rest of the machine (including the exterior) is fine with no issues. I was obviously informed by IBM that this is not a warranty item, and quoted a ridiculous price for replacement through them.

The part # for my LCD is 42T0343. I found this replacement on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/A-NEW-IBM-42T0342-1 ... ltDomain_0, and also, this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-IBM-42T0342-LAP ... 1|294%3A50.

Is this a difficult to do by one self? I'm fairly technical person, and am not afraid of opening up my box; however, I can't profess to being much of a hardware technician.

It's not too terribly difficult if you follow the maintenance manual verbatim and take your time.
Here's an alternative for the less than handy folks ... slightly more expensive ($20 more in your case) but a big time saver. By the way, you want XGA, not WXGA for an X61.

Harry, I followed your advice and purchased the complete LCD unit that you linked to on eBay. I was a little clumsy in dissembling the machine, especially dealing with the antenna wires (and the various pieces of tape), but I was able to put it back together and bring it back online relatively quickly. A little extra black electrical tape was useful to have on hand.

Thanks again for the know how and advice.

Thanks for all the great info on these forums.
Glad I finally have an excuse to register and post.
I have the same problem as OP (same machine type, broken/shattered LCD).
However, the ebay links in all your previous posts are not active any more.
Can I trouble you to post an example of what I need?
Checking on Lenovo's website (based on machine type and serial number) I get different part numbers than what OP posted. Moreovere, I get seemingly different results on EBAY when searching by Part number vs. FRU number:
Parts shipped with your system
Type: 7675 [change]
Serial #: xxxxxxx [change]
Mfg part # FRU part # Description Serviceable?
13N7095 13N7096 LCD MODULE 12.1" XGA (SUMSONG) SECONDARY YES

I'd appreciate any input or examples of what should work.
I gather from the correspondance, that there may be some parts to be purchased that make the assembly easier.
Also, if anyone came across a reliable vendor that would replace it for me, that might be useful.
Thanks
