My Desktop and ThinkPad Setup (Pic Warning!)

#1 Post by schen » Sat Feb 21, 2009 3:53 pm

I've finally gotten my desk setup to a point where I'm OK to post it!

Here's the basic overview (left to right): T42/15" on 2877 Dock, 20" Acer LCD main monitor, 17" Viewsonic LCD secondary monitor, and 600x on the SelectaDock III (can't see it in this view)

T42 on Dock: This is the T42/15" that I got from another Forum member with the dreaded GPU issue. It just came back from Superior Reball and seems to be fine. It's a higher-end T42 with a SXGA+ Flexview LCD and Bluetooth, now has 1Gb RAM, and 100Gb/5400rpm HDD. It just received a new factory load and everything seems to work fine, but still needs a little work. This station with the Dock is very useful since we have a number of T4x/R5x plus an X31 and A31, all of which work on this dock. It also alleviates me from having to have out another A/C adapter, as well as provides me with a UltraBay 2000. I have the HD15 VGA output connected to the main Acer monitor's analog input so I can view the image there too. I have a compact IBM wireless KB/Mouse setup on this dock since it's location make it a bit of a reach when I have to do much on it.

The is the "Front End" to my desktop rig. It's an old self-built desktop based on the AMD Athlon XP 2500 (Barton) CPU, runs 1.5Gb of RAM and has 2 160Gb/7200rpm drives in it. The 2 screens really help in allowing me to get a lot done and monitor things like email at the same time. Yes, those are IBM/Infinity speakers and a WorkPad 505 that I use regularly. The jury is still out on the Logitech DiNovo KB/Mouse setup, but it's nice that I can just pull out the number pad when I need it instead of it taking up space all the time.

This one shows the secondary monitor that I have connected to an Inline video switcher which allows me to work on a desktop for someone while still working on something else on my main monitor. I have a server-sized (no NMB) IBM RT 3200 Trackpoint equipped KB for that purpose. on the far right, you can see the 600x sitting in a SelectaDock III that I plan on eventually become my file server as soon as I get around to tackling that project. What you can't see, is underneath is a complete stereo system that has a 3-Speed turntable, Cassette Deck, CD, and 8-Track Deck connected through a integrated amp to my main desktop that allows me to archive obsolete media to digital.

That's all on the right-side leg of my "L" shaped desk where I take everything apart and swear at the machines I'm working on! Of course, what it doesn't show is that three quarters of the time, I'm not in here, but instead on my recliner with the 14" T42p instead. :D And that weird looking thing to the left of the left speaker.... that is an IBM recruiting tool from their consulting arm dating back to about 2000. I should have gotten out my IBM stress-ball and coffee mug, but that would have a been a bit much!

That wallpaper of yours, can you paste it here (in the bigger resolution you have)?

Updates to my setup rig:

The Logitech DiNovo KB/Mouse rig has given way to a Kensington corded KB, and Logitech Revolution MX mouse. This has been a MAJOR improvement in responsiveness. The BT was a PITA!

The Dock has lost it's spot to an Epson FB Scanner that gets used pretty regularly, since I rarely if ever bring the T42/15" into the office. It has taken the place of the T42p/14" and since an X41 has replaced the X31, the dock really doesn't fill a need any more.

So the 600x in it's Dock has moved to the other side silently awaiting it's turn to get into the action.

The desk to the left has gotten a LOT of action the last few weeks, having seen 2 normal Acers, an Acer netbook, a Sony and any number of misc. ThinkPads. It won't be long now until the homebuilt desktop will have it's guts replaced with something more modern than a AMD XP 2500 and a couple of 160Gb HDDs!
