Which model in T4x series to upgrade to?
So my T30 just died. I booted up, got to the desktop and was about to click on an app when I heard a faint 'tic' and everything went away. No video, HD not spinning whether it's AC or batt powered. So...
I'm thinking to upgrade to a T4(x). I use the laptop to mix/master recorded music (need lots of RAM, fat HD, hi rez video and a fast processor, in that order). 'Environmentally', I live in Central America on a boat so durability/ruggedness is desirable (why I liked my previous T20/T30's).
Which T4x would fit the bill for me? Which model T4(x) is considered 'best of show' and/or which model to shy away from (if applicable) ?
Thanks

I think a T42 with Ati 9600 would be more than sufficient, as anything later has the HDD error at boot up, when you use non IBM HDD; and utilises far more battery. Many T4x system (up to T42) allows you to use 320GB pata drive without error, and I think T41s are nowadays quite easy to fail; where as T42 and T43 are just coming out of warranty, there is increasing supply of those.
However this set up is quite rare, and might be better to get a T60 instead of maxing out T4x; dual core does speed up most processes. Not to mention T4x uses PATA drive, which is not main stream anymore, upgrading it could be costly. You can get some decently specced T60 here

Since you live on the water, I would not get a T4x at all. The magnesium covers and subframes corrodes badly in high humidity. I think a R51 or R52 would be best. these have no magnesium components and performance are very similar to T42/T43.
R51
Use the 400Mhz Banias/Dothan thus run very cool. Similar to a T42
R52
Use the 533Mhz Dothan which runs hotter but it use the DDR2 RAM which is very cheap. Similar to a T43.
PATA HDD
Both these still use the vanishing PATA HDDs. If you want the SATA HDD, then a T60/R60 would give you that capability.
