ThinkPad 770 Z - Modem Problem

#1 Post by Guest » Mon Jan 24, 2005 11:56 am

My friend bought last week an used ThinkPad 770 Z (built 1999) running under Windows ME : Everything is working fine besides the internal ACP modem. Several installation procedures failed - the device manager looks nice, the IRQs are correct - I also tried to disable IRQ sharing - but within the installation the following message appears:

MWME0001: Interner Fehler (means "internal error")
Primery Code 5 (0x0005)
Secondary Code 19528688 (0x129fbf0)
File : MWMWIN.C
Line 4349

This message will be displayed also when the operation system starts before the user name is to put in.

When I try to start the modem software after installation on the running system I'll get the following display:

MWME0001: Interner Fehler
Primery Code 5 (0x0005)
Secondary Code 4275438608 (0xfed60410)
File : MWMWIN.C
Line 5813

Both times, after clicking the ok, another error message occurs:
with multiple choice: Modem neu starten (restart) - Modem herunterfahren - Details. The only solution now is to press the "Modem herunterfahren" button to be able to go on working with the system.

I also tried registry hacks, by the way I could fix another device manager problem with an Hard Disk Controller resource conflict, but the modem problem still is remaining.

In the device manager no any problem is displayed, everything seems working proper, DSP is been displayed as "ThinkPad Digital Signal Processor", Modem is been desplayed as "ThinkPad modem", but the modem does not work ...

I assume this is a software error - I have tested the modem with the BIOS testing routine and received an OK by the basic system.

I looked into several threads with similar problems with other ThinkPad versions but none of the hints was working.

I hope, someone with the same proble can help - thank You very much for answer.

Modem problem

Modem problem is solved by removing Windows ME and installing a fresh clean version of Windows 98 SE referring to the IBM system supplement files to avoid problems with the hard disk controller.

The problem seemed to be caused from missing driver files for the sound system which seems to be connected with the (voice) modem.

Everything is working fine now - today I've got a connection to an internet provider.

Sorry, the original post was not correctly logged in, for this I was displayed as a "guest" - but fortunately the problems are solved, maybe some other can be helped with this solution.

As far as i know this problem is undocumented by IBM. Likely since these units are no longer supported or something.

There is a patch out there called mwregfix. I will look around for it later in case you would like it.

Any ThinkPad with an MWave modem (770, 600 series for example) can get this error. It happens in Win ME, Win2k & Win XP.

I've personally used mwregfix on 770X/770Z/600E machines running WinXP to fix this problem. You just run the file and reboot and you're fixed.

Supposedly mwregfix modifies the registry. I have seen manual registy mods and applied them to no avail.

Thinkad 770Z - Modem problem

Hi, Len,

thank you very much,

I did try the mwregfix patch before under WIN ME but it didn't work.

After fresh install with WIN 98 SE together with the supplement files from the IBM site and installing the V90 upgrade now everything is working properly and my friend is very happy with her ThinkPad - and I am planning to buy one for my own use, too.

Nevertheless many thanks - kindest regards
