X61s and a new 32" Sony TV

#1 Post by iamdmc » Tue Feb 24, 2009 6:03 pm

I just bought a new Sony Bravia KDL32L4000 for $425 (Canadian, so ~$340USD) and I am really excited to use it with my X61s. The problem I am facing (one which I knew I would) is getting the X61s to display 1366x768 (native resolution of the TV).

In the listed display resolutions available I was only able to get 1280x768. I also have the option to do 1280x800, 1280x1024, and 1400x900 - but each time I try one of these the image becomes very distorted. At 1280x768 the image is OK but still a little blurry. By the way, when I'm using the TV as my monitor, I use it as the primary monitor (no secondary monitor - ie. ThinkPad display is off).

I'm running Window 7 x64 build 7000, 4GB RAM, with the Intel GMA965 (X3100). The TV is connected to my X61s by a VGA cable.

Can anyone suggest any fixes?
I've tried a program called Ultramon, but have found it to be ineffective.

AFAIK you'll need to hack your Intel driver to display all resolutions... I haven't done this myself yet, but heard from a friend of mine that it's possible:

and

You might start out with trying the regular Intel driver on a Vista or XP installation... Dunno if W7 has any impact on the non-available resolutions...

You might wanna check this slightly similar thread out:

Some years ago when I was still using Windows there was a tool called "Powerstrip", maybe it's still available, it lets you freely choose resolution and frequencies.
Other than that, the available resolutions should be detected, otherwise I would blame a bad driver - try to update to the newest version?
I would say this is not a "custom" resolution, it is just an available resolution of the TV, which either the TV doesn't inform about because of a bad EDID or the driver just doesn't look for...
