Re: tinkpad r40 motherboard
I would look at the ones for sale here before you try fleabay. A quick search found this one and this one. IMO. Download the HMM at lenovo and the fru number will tell you which models they are from.
Z61p (WUXGA)/2.16ghz/2gb/60gb, R51/1.8ghz/1gb/160gb, R40/1.5ghz/2gb/80gb, 600E/366mhz/416mb/20gb, Project R51 with SXGA+
Re: thinkpad r40 motherboard
Thanks for the links, but I still am unsure if any of those will work. 91p7283 is the number on the bottom of my board. one of the links showed a 91p7284, but i still dont know if that will work in this frame. will ANY 14" r40 logic board work? the HMM for the r40 doesnt even have this FRU listed...
Re: thinkpad r40 motherboard
You can pm' the sellers and ask them what model size they came from. I quickly reviewed the HMM and didn't find which models they came from. A little more research is needed, but you will get quick answers from the members here. We're all pretty friendly here.
And by the way, welcome to the forum!!

Any board from R40 will work. However, you should post your model number so the specs can be compared, since these machines have come in a variety of guises...

Re: thinkpad r40 motherboard
I'm kinda in the market for one also. I've seen several sites that list a TON of FRU number changes, (sometimes over 10 different ones). HMM only lists about what, 6 different ones now. Most are CPU socket, security, or the 1394 combo's. I've come to the conclusion that a 14" or 15" doesn't seem to make a difference but the CPU probably will.
What symptoms do/did you have with your mobo?
My worst one: Battery charges, spins the CD, spins the HDD, spins the fan, no video,(LCD or external), no beep with memory removed, no beep with CMOS out. Push the power button and all the LED's cycle, but then only the power & charge indicators stay on. I've left it on for maybe 30 minutes, and the fan assy gets very warm but I chickened out after any longer wait and powered it off.
I've been over the mobo with a fine tooth comb and a lighted magnifying glass and the only thing loose was a 24 pin surface mounted item between the CPU socket and the rear USB port. It's marked as TRANSPOWER HB914-3-A 2903. Resoldering it back made absolutely no difference. Even tried flexing mobo different ways while powering up and didn't hurt or help.

Re: thinkpad r40 motherboard
thanks guys.
the motherboard is dead. no power. tried 3 different power supplies. removed the ram, hdd and optical drive. still no post or any sign of life.
the bottom says type 2723.
i guess ill just try one of the 14" ones on ebay and ill post the results here for future reference.
