4 GB Limitation X60

#1 Post by kuifje76 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 1:55 pm

Hello, I was looking to update the bios of my x60T, when i saw the following :

Version 1.11

* (Fix) The process of Fingerprint authentication at power-on was improved. (BIOS)
* (Fix) Memory address more than 4GB can't be accessed under Vista WindowsPE. (BIOS)
* (Fix) Intermittent errors, such as device unrecognized, may occur at wake-up after BIOS configuration was changed in BIOS Setup during hibernation. (BIOS)
* (Fix) A Post error may intermittently occur at wake-up from hibernation after ThinkPad BIOS Setting for Windows was run. (BIOS)
* (Fix) This BIOS contains a workaround of resolution change issue. When using an Intel Graphics model on a minidock with an external monitor set to SXGA, the resolution will intermittently be changed in certain docking/undocking situations switch to XGA. (BIOS)

what do I make of this ?
Can we use 64-bit OS on X60T ?
Can we use more then 3GB ram ?

I think the way this fix description is put is somewhat ambiguous, one can read it either way... Besides, according to the hardware limitation of this chipset it is not possible to access more than 3 GBs, not to mention about 4 ... I highly doubt that this BIOS fix resolves the RAM limitation...

Just my 0.02$

I don't think that line means what you think. What's for sure is that things are as they always were, same 3gb limit, sure you can use a 64-bit OS if you have a matching cpu, but that is not going to change things either.

windows PE is used to boot into the rescue & recovery environment using the thinkvantage key or F11 button at boot.   the error fixed has to do with memory addresses above 4GB in this environment, not memory addressing at or above 4GB in windows.   note: addresses ≠ addressing.

your X60 is still limited to addressing 3GB total.   this is still a chipset limitation, not one programmatically altered in the BIOS.

sorry.
