Tight on cash right now, no money to get a new lappy, so trying to revive a pretty dead T22.
It boots up, shows the IBM splash screen. After about 3 minutes the screen will go blank but the fan is still running. I tried to start it again and again, and it boots but takes only 30secs to go blank, to a point that the IBM doesn't even show. I removed the hard drive and the battery, and it still does that. I tried going into CMOS and it does the same thing.
Any ideas?

You could be having a CPU overheat problem. Or there's a problem with the inverter or backlight circuitry. You might also have a situation with bad memory. High temperatures (above room temp, for example) can cause memory failures. Try connecting an external monitor (pressing Fn+F7 will cycle through activating the LCD or the external monitor, or both) and see if you still get a video signal out the external VGA port when the LCD dies. I would suggest grabbing a copy of PC Doctor for DOS for the T2x systems from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F
or an .ISO image that you can burn onto a CD from that I host here:
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/ibm_t2x/ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso
There's a couple of tests for checking the fan and temperature sensors. This diagnostic also has a memory test but I prefer using this one:

Re: T22 boots then dies...
I've tried plugging into an external monitor but it doesn't work. Also tried to boot with 1x128MB RAM and the same happened for both modules. So I guess it's more likely problems of the CPU or something else. Not too sure if it's the CPU as the ambient temp here is about 20C. I recall the CPU doesn't have active cooling so it can't be a blown fan.rkawakami wrote:You could be having a CPU overheat problem. Or there's a problem with the inverter or backlight circuitry. Thanks for the links, but I can't really run diag tests when I can't even get it to POST.

Re: T22 boots then dies...
Sorry, I misinterpreted your statement about "and it boots but takes only 30secs to go blank" as being that the laptop would pass POST and be able to load an OS and then have the display blank out.
Have you tried removing all of the memory and see if you at least get the 1-3-3-1 beep code?
I would also remove the MiniPCI modem/ethernet combo card from the bottom of the unit and see if the problem remains. Sometimes those cards go bad and it leads to some weird issues. Other than that, it appears that you have taken out the other pieces which may cause boot/power problems (hard drive and battery). I doubt that any Ultrabay device would make the system behave like that but you could try that as well. If stripping down the system doesn't yield any positive results then it sounds like that's a problem with the CPU and/or motherboard. The last thing you could try would be to swap out (or simply re-seat) the CPU and see what happens.
