T30 Speed - Hard drive runs and runs

I purchased 2 T30's for my kids on e-bay. They work ok but when I borrowed one, the hard drive is accessed an incredible amount and runs slow. I thought it might be memory, so I upgraded to 1gig but no change noticed.

Does anyone have an idea I could persue?

Try a defrag and the program CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com
There's probably very little free space left on the HD.
Have you checked for virus & co?

Had just done a defrag, hard drive has more than 50% free (15 out of 30 gig)
Just did a virus scan in safe mode
No change

What are the Type/Model numbers for those machines (e.g. 2366-87U)?
How much RAM do they have that's actually working? (check in Control Panel/System first screen)
Does that tally with what's physically in the RAM slots?
go to Start/Run, type in msconfig and hit OK.
See any programs in the Startup section that look out of place?
What OS are you running?
How large is the page-file?
