760EL Battery needs replacing

#1 Post by Think760 » Mon Jan 24, 2005 5:42 pm

Hello,

I need to replace the battery for my IBM ThinkPad 760EL.

When I search the battery sites on the web it gives me two alternatives for the 760EL.

FRU29H9232
FRU29H9032

The original Battery Pack was a FRU29H9232
Type: Li-ion
Voltage: 10.80
Capacity: 3500mAh
Dimension: 105.50x104.50x18.00mm

However the FRU29H9032 is:
Type: Ni-MH
Voltage: 8.40V
Capacity: 4000mAh
Dimension: 105.50x104.50x18mm

Would the 8.4V Ni-MH still work and have enough power to run the Laptop?
Would it charge correctly in the laptop?
What type should I get?

I don't fully understand the voltage difference, 10.8V Vs 8.4V.

Thanks

A NiMH battery will give adequate power to your laptop, but I'd reccomend looking a little longer, maybe for a 760ED or a 760E battery to ensure you get a lithium ion battery instead. The NiMH and the LiION batteries are both just as outrageously priced (could buy a new ThinkPad 760 on eBay for the price of a new battery), but the LiION battery will give you alot more battery cycles and more years of service if you treat it right. The LiION battery in my 760E has a 1996 vintage and still holds a two hour charge.
