Wirless Compatibility R40 / R52??
Wirless Compatibility R40 / R52??
Hi,
consider to place an R52's b/g wireless adapter in my R40 that currently only hold a b-wireless adapter. Will that work?
I had to replace my R52 due to vent noise and LCD trouble. Now, I have no further need for the wireless adapter in that R52, but my still good R40 has only a wireless card capable the b-wireless standard. Would be a good progress for it if I could use the R52's wireless card there.
It shows as "Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG network connection" in the control panel.
Is there any chance that could work (the 1GB RAM extension did not due to physically different shape)?
Three point I would see trouble-points:
- physically
- antenna
- driver
Thanks for any tips

I don't think you'll have any problems with that.
Download the 2915 drivers first from the Intel website (onto your R40) but don't install yet.
Uninstall the current R40 wifi card in Device Manager and shut down the laptop immediately.
Remove the old card and insert the new one.
At bootup Windows may find/install the new card already.
If not, install the Intel drivers from above.

Thanks for the answer. Sounds compelling.
I will report here on the success once I got the time to make the changes.

Re: Wirless Compatibility R40 / R52??
I'm wondering if jwege got that particular card to work???
Anyone else with suggestions regarding an R40 that will accept a b/g card w/o the 1802 error? I have an R40 and the Actiontec card is not very friendly with WPA-TSK.
It doesn't work.
I need a replacement or suggestions as to which type of card will work.

R40 will accept IBM (Atheros) b/g or a/b/g with no error, been there and done that, but the first version only regardless of the FRU.
Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG will throw an error when installed in my experience.

Re: Wirless Compatibility R40 / R52??
I'm pretty sure we got an 1802 error on bootup when we put an IBM branded 2915 ABG card into the R40. Along with that, it was the worst performing card I had ever used... used to drop connections all the time, but it might have just been my card.

Just apply the 1802 hack if it crops up. It does NOT work from T43/R52 upwards.
An Intel 2200bg should also work fine.

George I'm not sure which Atheros cards you are referring to. I've looked in the HMM and only see 'B' cards.ajkula66 wrote:R40 will accept IBM (Atheros) b/g or a/b/g with no error, been there and done that, but the first version only regardless of the FRU.

Any specific card you could point me out to?

Re: Wirless Compatibility R40 / R52??
Any Atheros cards for T4x/R5x series will work just fine. They even use the same driver as the Atheros a/b that was offered as one of the options on R40.
Any FRU that you find under # 14 here will be OK, when it comes to IBM/Atheros cards:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46474.html
No "1802" hack needed, plug and play.
