fan on t42p

#1 Post by boris » Sat Feb 28, 2009 8:44 pm

The fan went out on my t42p. Can I use the one from a broken t41 I have? I am asking because it looks like the fan is the same, but the contact patch to the GPU is different. Does anyone know how to swap the fans from the heat sinks?

Thank you!

Without knowing the 7-character model numbers of your machines, it's hard to tell how to go about swapping fans.

Generally, I don't see it as a good idea because of hot and powerful GPU in your T42p. I'd always go with a "long" fan, and preferably a new one.

By carefully drilling out the 4 rivets you can open the fan casing. Check the fan spindle is the same length and diameter for the one you want to to use. Also check the fan blades are the same. I'd assume the rotation speed is the same but you can check this (before and after) with the TPFC utility. When reassembling superglue will hold the two parts of the fan casing back together. YMMV.
