x2x series
x2x series
Is there any difference between the x20, 21, 22, 24, 24 other than processor and wireliess, ie. build quality and other features?
Thanks
Thanks

I have had x20 and x23 and did some research and found...
x20 and x21 are basically the same, different cpu speeds (500-700mhz)
x22,x23,x24 are basically the same, different cpu speeds (733-1.13ghz)
the guts are quite different between the 20/21 and 22-24. going from the 20/21 to 22-24 you gain:
new chipset (i440ZX -> i835)
new video chip (rage mobility 4mb -> radeon mobility 8mb)
faster RAM clock (100 -> 133mhz)
higher ram capacity (320mb -> 640mb)
availability of factory wireless
technically, there's no reason you couldn't put an internal mini-pci wireless card in an x20 or x21 -- you'd have to sort out the antennae, but you'd have to do that with any of these that weren't equipped with factory wireless -- the non-wireless x22-24 do *not* have the antennae and associated bits already there.
there may be some other stuff i'm forgetting, but those were the big ones. having had both I have no reason to believe there's much difference in build quality -- i've had a hardware issue or two with our x23 but I bought it used and it's suffered some obvious physical abuse =p.

if all you want it for is web and typing, i'd just get the x20, max out the RAM, and get a cheap wireless PC-card (will be cheaper and less fuss than internal). believe it or not i do my typing in bed on an old beater Gateway laptop with 233mhz PII and 288mb RAM, and..sure it takes forever to boot up and start Word, but it works fine, and I don't care if i drop it or spill my drink on it or whatever =P
the x23 we have now is my wife's main computer and i'm currently debating whether i should pick up another used x22-24 or blow the cash on an x31 -- and i'm actually leaning towards the used route since all I really do when mobile is browse the web, watch movies, or listen to music, and I've got a big athlon64 desktop for games and ripping DVD's and the like (which I don't do that much of anyway)

yeah....
that would be the financially sound route to go.... but i can't stand pcmcia wireless, i have a linksys wireless card, but my wife was always finding a way to sit so that it would bend the antenna, obviously not good on the card slot. so i added an antenna and mini pci g card, i have 40 bucks into it. it will only cost 35 on my next machine ( i have an antenna left over)
i'll probably steal my 40gnx and 256 dimm from the a20
In a whimpering voice..... but the x40 is sooo pretty....

it just occoured to me that adding internal wireless to an x20/21 might mean losing the wired ethernet since that may use the mini-pci slot. i'm not sure if the cdc daughtercards from the 22-24 will fit the 20-21. maybe a used x22-24 with built in wireless is more up your alley, i still don't think i'd spend the money on the x40, but hey, it's your money -- not mine ;]
iI thinking about getting an cheap X2x series to carry around when I go back to school in August. Basically for word processing, web-browsing, e-mail, some non-intense softwares, many dictionaries, etc...
I would like to have internal wireless though.
Ahhh the dilemma... a sweet dilemma nevertheless... LOL

PCMCIA Wireless
I use a 3Com PCMCIA wireless card with a retractable (X-Jack) antenna that really solves the annoying protrustion problem of all other cards. This is essentially as good as built-in wifi, with the ease of PCMCIA.
I used to use the card in an X21, though I've since sold that machine. It is now in a T22 and works equally well in either, and preserves those gorgeous ThinkPad lines.

Reception isn't great
but I have a small house, so its tollerable. I have an old Orinoco card that does MUCH better, but I'm not willing to tollerate the plastic rectangle sticking out the side.
