T41: fan broke but do i really need it???

#1 Post by dimon » Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:07 am

Hi,

I was getting fan error message on the bootup...I pressed ESC and machine started w/o fan.

I always run centrino hardware control (CHC) on my machine it downclocks major system resources to increase battery life. It also shows CPU/HardDrive temperature - it is quite normal WITHOUT FAN! 22-35C...When I had fan, the temp was in this range most of the time.

Is it possible that with my usage patterns fan is not needed?

Is fan used for anything else besides CPU? Perhaps video card? ( my machine is plain , has some standard ATI card)

Thanks!

Yes you need a fan!

What about if the program fails ? Also you say you have an ATI gpu , which generates alot of heat, if it isn't managed correctly. I personally in my opinion see that getting a $30 - $50 long fan or $15 - $30 short one better than hanging your chances on a program that may or may not fail in the coming days/weeks.

35c for cpu? Sounds like you are reading the wrong temp (sounds like the HD temp). CPU temp is usually 40+ for me.

You need a fan.

You need a fan.

yes, I will get it and install it...but..

note, that temp depends on :
- place where you live/room temp
- how you use your comptuter
- if CPU is downclocked etc..

Now, as I type CPU is 40...after 1 hour of work..so it really depends
