i just bought an x301 and have a downgrade cd to XP professional. you live in germany? hrmm... i'd be willing to sell it to you for $60. (shipping international is $13)

2) actually... am i able to just copy it? or does it need its own serial number? does anybody know how that works? if i can just make a copy of it and send it to you, i'll do it for $25.

There is software like Nero that can copy non-protected DVD/CDs. The other way to go is with some virtual image (.iso, .bin, .daa) program like Alkohol120%, Virtual CD, PowerISO, Magic ISO, Daemon Tools (free), create an .iso image of all recovery CDs and then burn these images on a blank CDs as images (not as files). Test the new media after that.

@OP: The choice of OS is a matter of personal preference and depends on what you are going to do. So, what are you going to use your laptop for? Also, I would suggest you to search the forum, there are many threads here discussing the choice of OS. BTW, welcome to the forum :)

Cheers,

Marin

thanks marin, i was actually referring to the issue of product key or licensing. I'm pretty sure i'd be able to faithfully duplicate the disc, just not sure if a duplicate is enough (ie if it requires its own product key of some sort).

to the original poster, if i can just make a copy of the XP Pro Downgrade CD and mail it to you, i can do it for $25 bucks. if you live in the US (but i think you're in Germany), i'll do it for 15.
