Bad hard drive?

#1 Post by pcengine92 » Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:26 pm

Hello everyone, and I am very happy to have found this forum! I have an a22e with a 12gb hard drive. I recently purchased a used 20gb hard drive that I believe is from an r40 thinkpad (the drive has a little round sticker on one side that says R40). The problem is that the 20gb drive is not being recognized by the bios. I was going to clone my data to the 20gb, but now am unsure. What's the point in cloning if the new drive is bad? I have no other way to test this drive. Any ideas?

Make sure the drive is seated correctly. Most of the time when a Thinkpad does not recognize a HD, it is because the HD was not seated correctly.
Also, if you want to clone your drive, you either need an external USB adapter or an Ultrabay HD adapter. You should be able to test the HD with either of those when connected to your Thinkpad. Does the drive show up in Windows disk management?

I haven't purchased the cloning software/hardware yet. I was going to purchase the Apricorn Universal HD Adapter (which I read about in another post).

That should work fine as well (although I haven't used the software that came with it.)
