I.B.M. Stuff other than PC's & TP's.

#1 Post by Bookworm » Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:35 pm

I just read about the IBM WorkPad line yesterday. Now I *have* to get a c505. (actualy I've been wanting a PDA type gadget for a while anyway.) I started digging around a little, and found some phones and not much else I didn't already know about.

What else has IBM made besides computers and peripherals that only work with computers?

Mostly what I'm wondering about are things like phones, PDA's, watches, cameras, etc., that can be used without a computer (or while completely disconnected from it) but that are also computer peripherals. For example, an external CD-ROM that is also a walkman. Apple made one of these, but it was so big and heavy you might as well just get a PowerBook. Apple also made digital cameras. Did IBM? What about a watch, like the Timex Data Link?

What else?

IBM didn't make that. It's a re-badged Palm.

I knew about the pos. I was thinking of gadgets for home/personal use.

I suppose I could network a pos to the TP for my next yard sale...

Well before they made cash registers, unit record equipments and computers IBM made all sorts of other things including clocks and even cheese cutters. Google for details but we used to have the former in my office and I saw the latter in a display case at an IBM facility many years ago.

They also made dictating machines at one time.

Which reminds me, "How often do you use your Dictaphone?"
"Never, I always use my finger."

Don't forget the IBM Selectric Typewriter (the one with the golf ball).

they used to make punch card technology a long time ago. (actually that might have been before they were actually called IBM, though.)
if you're interested in PocketPCs, there's always the IBM PC110 (http://www.komotch2.com/tps/pt110.htm)

I've been using my IBM Hooded Sweatshirt and T-shirt for quite some time now without a computer.

ITR (International Time Recording) preceded IBM. They made clocks and devices for clocking workers in and out of factories, offices, and shops. When I joined IBM in 1967 we had ITR clocks in the office.

What fond memories. My favorite was the IBM Selectric II. And even better than the ordinary II was the Correcting Selectric II. But all models were the Rolls-Royce of typewriters: built like tanks (and weighed like one!) with the fabulous keyboards that started IBM's reputation for excellence in them.

Great article on them at Wikipedia:

Incredibly, some of the design was taken from a toy typewriter by Marx!

I'd rather not reminisce about IBM POS systems...my last job involved doing phone support for them...but at least they were more user-friendly than the NCR POS systems.

During WWII IBM made M1 carbine rifles. They produced 346,500 Carbines which was 5.7% of the total rifles produced.
