Hi guys,

I m thinking of getting a X301 which is on a promotion here, but with a 120 HDD (mechanical drive sata)

Can i swap the bloody HDD with my X300 SSD?

Most definitely you can swap the HDs. Do you also want to preserve the current installation on the SSD? For due to the different hardware in X301 you may have to reinstall your system.

Oh definitely a new installation..

I just want to know the hard disk sizes are the same? 1.8" or 2.5" both same size?

I guess you mean the physical size. You also want to put the Toshiba drive in the X300? (so to say full swap :) ) Both drives (the SSD and the mechanical one) are 1.8'', so a "full swap" shouldn´t be a problem at all.

Can someone please help me out here on this ssd subject.?
What exactly can one do if a SSD happens to fail? I assume the contents cannot be so easily found as they can on the tape of an old school hard drive, am I right?
thanks, jL

Sorry, I can´t give you an answer, but that is a very good question I was wondering myself. You may want to start a new thread on it in the general ThinkPad software/hardware thread. It will be also interesting to know the general reliability of SSDs compared to mechanical drives (the failure of which, in general, cannot be predicted). But in any case, doing regular backups remains IMO a must.

Thanks,

Marin

There is a statement on lenovo blogs that exactly the near impossibility for recovering ssd data was a reason to first stay with traditional hdds.
